6 Ways To Handle Feeling Overwhelmed and Unmotivated

I’ve got to be honest I’ve felt so unmotivated and overwhelmed lately, I think the way the world has been dealing with coronavirus, shorter days, lack of sunlight and the news I think it has been very natural to feel overwhelmed. I feel like making sure I’m isolated, and working from home can be so tough, I am very grateful to have amazing co-workers who understand, but I feel like the pandemic has caused me to have increased anxiety, unmotivated and overwhelmed. I know however, I’m not alone in this feeling.

01. Ask yourself 6 questions

When I’m feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated, there are a few I tend to ask myself when I feel overwhelmed or unmotivated:

  • How will I feel if I give up on this?
  • Is fear just getting in the way?
  • Can I change the way I approach things?
  • What can I do to feel better about this?
  • What do I need to do to reach my goals?
  • Will this make me happy?

Sometimes assessing how you feel and what might be causing you to feel this way. Sometimes just putting your thoughts on the page can really help, or it will open your mind to a different way to approach life, or maybe you need to follow a different path. Either way, knowing it is okay is important, and make sure you’re honest.

02. Surround yourself with supportive people

I’m so grateful to have amazing people at work who are so supportive, and also understand how isolating it can be during this current pandemic. Also having family members who are really understand how I’m feeling, and what I need is so important. They support me in everything I want to do, what I want to achieve and believe in me when I don’t believe in myself. I definitely feel like the pandemic has made this more difficult, however, we have adapted and done video calls and phone calls, even though it isn’t the same, it definitely makes the world of difference to my overall wellbeing.

03. Take small steps you can take to get back on track

When you take a step back and look at everything you need to do, it can really feel overwhelming and emotional just looking at everything you need to do and it can be really discouraging. So instead breaking down everything you need to do can be really important.

To create the best list, start off with what is the most important to do today and remember that as long as you’re doing your best that is all that matters.

04. Take a break and get outside

I’ve definitely been taking a break lately from a few different things in my life, and taking a break can really give you perspective on your life. I actually took a break from social media and learned so much about what I wanted to do, what I wanted to achieve and where I want to go with my life. Not only that by removing the amount of pressure on your shoulders to achieve everything in your life, to smash through those goals, can be so draining. Taking a break can make the world of difference, honestly.

Something that my colleague said at work was about getting outside can make such a difference, and it is true. I went for a run the other day and it really made me feel so much better, it made me feel stronger, a clearer mind and more relaxed. Getting lots of fresh air even just for a little walk around the block can help, especially because we all need to get some fresh air, to get outside of the house it is just freeing and so relaxing.

05. Focus on what makes you happy

Finding happiness when you’re feeling unmotivated and overwhelmed can be so hard, however, finding things that make you happy, it can be the small things like:

  • listening to your favourite playlist
  • rereading your favourite book
  • watching your favourite programme
  • take a nap
  • play your favourite game
  • have a video call with a loved one

06. Remind yourself of your successes

We’ve all had successes whether they’re big or small, remind yourself you can achieve whatever you like in your life. I’m definitely the kind of person that tends to sell myself short, and not give myself credit where credit is due, and I feel like we all need to give ourselves a little break, and appreciate everything we’ve achieved.

What you’re feeling will definitely not last forever, take it one day at a time, and  you’re not alone.

There are some really great ideas here. I thought I was doing okay with it but ever since the clocks changed I’ve definitely been struggling and trying to find a balance that gives me everything that I need. Trying to get out more even though it’s dark is a challenge but one I’m working on. I hope you’re okay, sweetie, and you know my DM’s are always open.

  • I recently went through a huge unmotivated state in my life and I ask myself what is it that makes me feel this way? Turns out it’s my job. The workplace that I’m in, the environment, surroundings, everything. It didn’t sit right with me anymore. So I decided to quit. And I couldn’t be more happier! I should leave that place a long time ago. It’s my mental health that matters the most. Thank you for these tips. It fits perfectly with my current situation xx
