Why I Am Not Rushing To Get Through Life’s Milestones

I recently posted a new post all about the thoughts I was having before I turned 26 which includes the long list of things that you should have achieved by a certain age, this includes various different things like travelling the world and having everything you want by a certain age. I’ve heard so many people say oh it is a millennial thing, I mean seriously? It is definitely not a millennial thing.

When I posted the post, I was actually really happy to see that I wasn’t alone in my struggles, people were in the same boat!

I have been married 5 years this year and we are currently in the process of saving to buy a house, and it is expensive. It genuinely takes time to save up for that kind of stuff and it is the most expensive investment that my husband and I will ever make in our entire lives but we are also saving for the right house. When the right house comes along, hopefully we will be 100% ready but we get asked so many times, oh when are you buying a house, when are you having children, when are you doing this, when are you doing that and it is like damn did you want to ask anything else?

We don’t have to do everything in life straight away and the pressure that I feel sometimes is so overwhelming if I’m honest with you.

But there is literally no rush. Paul and I are 26 & 28, and have been together over 8 and a half years, we are enjoying our lives together. When you get married people literally assume you are going to start making babies and that is basically what happens, and it doesn’t work like that.

People literally say millennials spend all their money on avocados (sorry I love a good avocado on toast) and on stuff that we don’t need but I am literally just living my best life, creating memories – me with my avocado and saving money at the same time.

I am definitely the kind of person that plans everything down to the last detail, however it is important to remember that you don’t need a list to tell you, oh you need to achieve everything by this age.

There is never going to be a one size fits all, you must follow this timeline to live the perfect life. Life is literally filled with ups and downs,, there is no timeline that literally fits everyone but as long as you are living your best damn life that is all that matters. If you have goals, do you best to achieve them, continue to do your thing and don’t let anyone pressure you to feel like you need to be achieve the perfect life wrapped up in a little bow.

Always remember that life is a marathon, and not a sprint, you don’t have to achieve everything straight away.

Ahh I love this! You’re so right, there isn’t one perfect one-size-fits-all life for everyone and it’s so much better to plan but still enjoy living in the moment. Happy five years too that’s so sweet and I’ll cross my fingers that the perfect house comes along for you guys! <3 <3

  • Love this post!! There’s no right or wrong way to life & I think people should be reminded of that. We didn’t have Amelia until we’d been together 7.5 years and I remember at the time people finding it odd that we’d waited so long? Do your own thing gal – You’re doing great!

I think it’s a funny age as everyone is at different points of their life and it almost becomes a competition unconsciously! I am so pleased you’re happy with where you and your hubby are in life! x

  • Too many people rush into things and then end up regretting it later on in life so I’m really happy that you have been honest and so open in this post darling. You never need to rush into anything! 💜

This post is so good Amie, I especially love that last sentence – life is a marathon, not a sprint. That is definitely going to be my new life mantra! xx

  • I hate the notion that things must be achieved by a certain age! It’s absolute rubbish! x

  • Lady Writes says:

It’s really important to take things at your own pace, whatever that may be or you’ll never enjoy things x

  • It’s so important to remember that everyone reaches goals/milestones at different stages. We have our whole lives, there’s no rush! x

  • Mel says:

I think it’s about living your like how you want. That’s all that matters.

I feel like I need to rush as time is running out which isn’t true! x

  • Erin says:

I’m feeling the same. Millenials get so much shit, I figure just go with it and have a good time. I love nandos, and avocados – and until I can afford to get a mortgage I will enjoy them lol

  • Really loved this post hun, a good read. Life really isn’t the same for everyone, we all have our own goals, our own paths and we don’t go at the same pace as each other. It’s so refreshing that someone else feels the same. I was actually talking about this today actually, it’s so great you and your other half are happy where you are, so nice to hear.

This is a great post! And I completely understand feeling the push from other people/society to get things done by a certain age/point in life. I’m 23, I graduated in May 2018, and only this past June I got my first job post-college. And I don’t have a place of my own. So, again, I completely understand not getting things done by a certain point and taking time to do things. Thank you for writing and publishing this post!

It can be so easy to get caught up in expectations but like you said, it’s SO important to remember that we all have a different timeline and we shouldn’t feel pressured!

I get questions all the time about when I’m going to marry my boyfriend since we’ve been together 7 years but we’re still young and I always say that it will happen when it happens. That’s really great that your saving for a house I know how hard it can be as we are trying to do the same! X

  • Lauren says:

Totally agree with you! I did some stuff quite early on – marriage and kids – but there’s so much I’m still muddling through and I think that’s ok! Your 20s are for finding yourself anyway

  • Where we are is exactly where we are meant to be! This is a powerful phrase. If we can let go and trust in life, it will all work out when it is supposed to. Thanks for posting this!

  • Roxanne says:

Wow this is so inspiring, I totally agree with everything you said. We need to stop worrying and start living more!!

  • You’re so right, I love this attitude and I’m glad you’re not giving in to the pressure being put on you by other people. There’s no set time for anything and we all move at our own pace. The constant questions about babies must be exhausting though! x

I’m 38, single, with no chidren. I can relate to people rushing you to meeet their timed check-list. I dont know why people are so fascinated by something they will have zero participation in or interaction with. I ignore the noise and continue to live life on my own terms. Best wishes in getting the new house soon!!! 🙂

  • Jaya Avendel says:

I could not love your mentality more. I think it is more about savoring each moment as it comes then trying to rush along and end up . . . where?

Whether you go slow or fast you will always end up at one place: home.

  • Lovely post! I find those expectations that you have to have done certain things by certain ages put everyone under so much pressure! It‘s really important to stay relaxed and follow your own path Xx

  • I totally agree with you that once you get to a certain age, the floodgates of certain questions just start opening up. It can be really annoying when people make assumptions about millennials- just like you however, I do love an avocado!

  • Evie says:

Love this post! There isn’t a one size fits all for life! I’m definitely going to be a bit older buying a house as I won’t graduate uni until I am 25. You will be so happy when you buy the right house for you, there is no rush especially into such a big purchase!x

  • Great post! I am the same, no rushing, taking it at our own pace and enjoying the journey. We are starting to save for mortgage too 🙂

I love this message! I personally think everyone is on their different path on a totally different timeline from everyone else. I’m not married yet, but I’m not worried, even though everyone my age is getting married and popping out babies. It’ll happen to be when it’s my time 🙂 In the mean time, I’ll just enjoy whatever else life throws my way instead!

It is totally fine to do things at your own pace. Life isn’t a cookie cutter and everyone is totally free with going at their own pace. At the same time, some people may not be interested in the same goals either. I love reading your thoughts about this! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I definitely understand you! Buying and renting a house and an apartment is quite expensive with the interest, credit score and so on…I personally plan to move after I graduate from fine arts and have a stable job to pay my rents. Anyway, I wish you the best for you and your husband and sending you lot of blessing to your future home!

I couldn’t agree more. I’m 31 now and, yes there are so many things I thought I would have “achieved” by now, some I have, some I haven’t. But that’s OK. Like you I’ve learnt that there really is no need to rush with anything! Even though there is so much pressure to do so.

  • Boxnip says:

Completely agree with you, I never worried about milestones in life at all. It was a case of things happen when they happen. 🙂

There’s no need to rush. I rushed and ended up falling flat on my face. There is no need to try and get ahead of the crowd, life is for enjoying and we can’t do that if we’re going 100 miles an hour.

    Great reflective post!

Everyone keeps asking me about a baby as I have been married four years! So much pressure xx

  • shelley says:

I love this. I really don’t see why we all need to feel rushed either. I turn 26 this year & I’m not married. the only thing I’ve ticked off that “life list” is having a baby & that wasn’t planned at all.

Such an excellent post and I love the “life’s a marathon not a sprint” comment – it’s so true and something I need to remember more often!

This is such an important post!! I’m 27, fast coming up 28, still living at home with my parents because I can’t afford to move out and single, with a very limited social life because anxiety hates me. The amount of conversations that just leave me feeling completely despondent because people seem to think I should be so much further in life with certain personal elements and it completely undermines everything I’ve worked hard to achieve. This is so important – people can do what they want, when they want, and it’s no one else’s business! Sorry, now I’m ranting, but this is such a great post!

I recently moved to flat with my boyfriend and I agree, it is expensive, but if you really want something you’ll find the way x
