If you hadn’t noticed I haven’t been on Twitter as much and as much as I hate to say it, I am just not as in love with Twitter as I used to be. I used to love scrolling through Twitter chatting to other people, supporting others, sharing the love and just genuinely having this amazing community. At first it was kind of an unintentional break but now I’m actually loving it, I love the way I now think about social media and I feel like I have a different view on social media – especially Twitter.
So 3 things happened when I took a break from Twitter and I think most of you will be surprised by 1 if I’m honest.
1. I Fell In Love With Instagram
Now we all know what a pain in the arse Instagram is in terms of engagement or anything really, but I have seriously fallen in love with Instagram. I love being able to be creative in a completely different way, and not only that I love being able to share my life in a different way, and I think I can do that on Instagram.
Even though it isn’t easy, Instagram is really hard to be honest it is so worth it. I eel like I have found my groove with Instagram, I have found my sweet spot and I love it so much.
2. I Realised It’s Not The Same
When I first started blogging, there were chats every night, there was a massive sense of community and lately I haven’t been feeling that. It feels like there is this massive amount of negative energy around Twitter. I’m not sure if it is just me, but I just haven’t been tweeting as much besides my scheduled tweets, I’ve not been doing as much.
I used to love being on Twitter, I mean it was my favourite platforms ever, but now I’m kind of like meh, it doesn’t feel like it used to. I follow some incredible people, but Twitter doesn’t feel like the space that it used to! I feel like it has changed so much, I used to love sharing my thoughts and everything, I mean even my husband would say he couldn’t get me off Twitter I’d be refreshing it every second, but now, I can go ages without checking it.
The only time I use Twitter is basically for scheduled tweets, talking to people sometimes (but I’m kinda anti-social 99.99% of the time so sorry about that) and my blog work.
3. I Found A New Creative Outlet
I love to be creative and when I last went out with Michelle (she is also a blogger and an absolute babe so I’ll leave her link here) we went to this cute little art shop as we were driving around and I found an amazing book on calligraphy. Now if you haven’t seen all the calligraphy online or on Twitter, I mean there are videos of people practicing calligraphy and honestly it is the most calming thing to watch in the world!
Now I haven’t gotten very far with it at the moment, I have to admit, I’m still learning, especially with the letter shapes, I mean its a bloody art form and 100% not easy, but I’m enjoying it. Not only that it is giving me time away from my phone which in all honesty is a great feeling!

Twitter can be such a negative space sometimes! Instagram seems to be much more about creative content as opposed to a war zone.
I totally agree, it is just a much better environment for me right now! xxxx
Twitter can be really overwhelming at times! I find that I don’t check it as often as I used to and prefer to spend my time reading blogs and connecting with people that way. That’s so cool you are learning calligraphy, I’d love to give it a go sometime, it always looks so beautiful, I imagine it’s quite tricky too. It’s always nice to have a creative hobby that gets you away from the screens. Thanks for sharing Amie and your cat mug is super cute! <3 xx

It really is, and lately I’ve felt like it’s not the greatest atmosphere for me which is a shame! It is so hard, but I’m enjoying it! xxxx
I don’t feel like I can be too negative about Twitter because it’s still one of my favourites, but I have noticed I feel more creative when I’m not on there as much. It can be time consuming and overwhelming, so having a breather from it really clears my mind and gets me in a space to write or create in other ways. I think it’s great that you’re learning calligraphy! I hope you’ll share a post about it sometime.
I know what you mean my lovely, it was one of my favourites too, I just feel like lately it is just consuming me and it isn’t a great environment for me. I will definitely try to share a post later when I’ve spent a bit more time on it! xxxx
I agree so much with this Ruth! It’s like Instagram is good for creative ideas and Twitter is good for information/inspiration on how to execute them!
Nati x | http://www.naticreates.com
I absolutely love twitter since I don’t see and block all the hate. I had to take some time away recently too as it was all getting too much and also fell back in love with insta. Loved this post!
Rosie
Thank you so much my lovely, I’m definitely blocking a lot more and filling my feed with people that I want to follow! xxxx
I definitely agree that Twitter has become increasingly negative lately. I’m glad you’ve found some advantages to taking a step back! I definitely agree that Instagram can be so much more supportive toward my own creativity than other social media. It’s so much more inspiring!
Exactly, I absolutely love the fact I can be more creative with Instagram! xxx
This was an interesting post, I have to admit that I used to be big into Twitter back in my prior blogging days and I remember Twitter chats being HUGE, I was into them nearly every night! Now, I see they have faded out a bit, I still participate quite a lot into daily threads for following people on other platforms which I like! However, I will admit Twitter has changed a bit.
It is such a shame that they have faded out, I loved them so much, and I loved being able to speak to people on a regular basis! xxxx
Really liked this post! While I love Twitter and Instagram, I think you were right to take some time away from the former. While Twitter can harbour such negativity, I feel like the huge creative influence that Instagram has is just super inspiring Xx
I totally agree, I love that Instagram is just so inspiring! xxxx
ok, so that mug is soo cute! (that was my first thought amie hehe) But I love this! I know exactly what you mean about the blogging chats, and that sense of community, but I feel like it gets better again in the winter months when everyone tends to huddle up indoors again and participate more in chats and things, maybe, i hope! Calligraphy looks soo cool, what a great skill to pick up <3
It’s from New Look my lovely! I just feel like things have changed so much! xxxx
Amie, I’ll admit Twitter isn’t the same. I remember a couple years ago, Twitter was really prominent in blogger chats. I had tons of personal conversations in learning more about the journey of others and their opinions in the blogging world. Today, seems like it’s more about promoting posts, which is cool. I just miss the community aspect and building a personal connection.
Natonya | http://www.justnatonya.wordpress.com
I used to love blogger chats so much, but I just wish the community was there! xxxx
I completely agree that Twitter can become such a negative place, I much prefer Instagram lately! I also hate that there’s barely any blogger chats lately, like where have they gone? ☹️

xo
I thought the same, I used to love being able to talk to other bloggers, it was such an amazing thing for me! xxxx
I also fell in love with Instagram after taking a couple of days off Twitter, and when I went back to it I was like, ‘so much text, so little colour!’ – it’s so interesting how the mood and atmosphere of these platforms is almost polar opposite, yet used by the same people.
Nati x | http://www.naticreates.com
Exactly! I love seeing all the colour, being able to interact with people’s creations. I mean the platform has it’s faults but you know it is still super inspiring! xxx
I completely agree with you lovely! Twitter has definitely changed as a platform and become a negative space. I find it useful to take breaks apart from when I post my scheduled tweets too. Nothing stays the same I guess but lets hope it starts becoming a more positive space once again. Thanks for sharing x
I think it is so important to take breaks, it’s not the platform I used to love! xxxx
I definitely find that I feel much more creative and inspired when I take time away – especially from Twitter.
Twitter is still my go-to platform, but it can get in your head pretty quickly and it can get overwhelming just as fast.
I’m glad you’ve found a new outlet in calligraphy, I’ve always wanted to give it a try!
Lovely post 🧡
I totally agree, it’s mine too my lovely, I still like it, but it’s not the platform that it used to be! xxxx
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your new hobby! I have to say that Twitter remains my favorite platform. I’ve met so many wonderful people and enjoy the comment threads, and the support that comes full circle when you interact a lot with your followers. It is pretty time consuming, though, and when I’m away from it a few days, I’m kind of amazed at how much more I accomplish!
Thanks again,
Joan

I know what you mean my lovely, I feel like sometimes it can be such a negative platform, I just wish the chats were back every night and there was more of a community! xxxx
I love Twitter but it’s such a time waster! I can spend hours n there and achieve nothing. Really interesting post!
I’m the same my lovely don’t worry! xxxx
Wow Calligraphy!!! That’s a great art but very complicated! I can’t wait for you to share yours!
I’m glad that you came across Calligraphy by having a break with social media 🙂
So far, I’m still quite into Twitter as I quite like it but Instagram is my favorite by far! 😊 Very difficult as you mentioned haha but I love it anyway 😜

It is so complicated but I’m loving learning it!
xxxx
It’s good to have a break now and again xz
I totally agree! We all need to take time away! xxx
Twitter really is a negative place a lot of the time. Right now it’s all anger about politics 24/7 (I’m in the US) and even though I like to stay informed the constant negativity is exhausting. I have definitely been guilty of being on Twitter too much, even when I’m not posting I’ll just be endlessly scrolling. So I’m trying to cut down and use it more productively. It’s amazing how much free time you have when you aren’t using Twitter, I don’t think we realize how much of a time suck it is until we take a break from it. Thanks for sharing your experience! Also learning caligraphy sounds like a lot of fun!
Ah I can totally understand that with politics, I think sometimes when you have a break it can just be so refreshing! xxxx
Twitter is one of my biggest source of traffic after Pinterest and haven’t tried taking a time off it. But would love to do a social media detox at some point. I do love how Instagram unleashes everyone’s creative side but it is one of the most challenging social media platform I have ever used as a blogger specially is you have small following. I am still trying to work my way around it. Thanks for sharing this post.
Kaye – http://amalog.co
I think sometimes we definitely need it, just to regroup and refresh ourselves! xxxx
Loved this! I agree with that Instagram is so different and better for me but Twitter is coming around. Great post!
I’ve still got to get to grips with Instagram still, but Twitter is so such a useful app! xxxx
Maybe I’m still new but I actually like Twitter, it’s quicker for communication with followers to me and Twitter is also the place to be for live updates on like news events or awards shows and stuff. But it’s also always good to take some time off.
I totally get what you mean my lovely, it’s so easy to communicate on Twitter! We all need time off from social media sometimes though! xxxx
Sometimes Twitter can be such a negative space! I love Insta (despite the issues it has for bloggers!) I love being creative too, hope the calligraphy is going well! Xx
I’m still getting to grips with it, but I’m doing well to be honest! xxxx
I’ve been spending a lot more time over on Instagram lately too – although the whole engagement thing winds me up, I enjoy it so much more and there’s still such an amazing community over there. I do still use Twitter, however, I find it be such a negative space sometimes and don’t use it nearly as much as I used to! Loved this! X
Evie x || https://eviejayne.co.uk
Same my lovely, I feel like I can be more creative over there rather than on Twitter, but I wish there was an app that combined them both! xxxx
I agree. Twitter chats are not as fun as they used to be! Instagram is definitely my fav but a totally pain like you say x
Kylie | Confidentlykylie.com
There is no middle ground with these 2 apps haha! xxx
I totally agree with you about it not being the same. When I first started blogging I had to schedule in doing Twitter chats but now I just have one chat a week that I participate in, although that is partly because of time! Instagram is great though and I feel like it allows for that creativity.
eleanorclaudie.com
I wish they would come back, I always loved doing them! I love being more creative on Instagram, it really does make me feel so good! xxxx
I have just started following you on instagram and I love this post!
Thank you so much my lovely! xxxx
I love watching calligraphy videos! It’s something I’ve always wanted to get in to but I don’t know if I’ve got the patience!
I’m loving being able to learn it! It’s so good! xxxx
I feel like I need to take some time away from twitter but I feel like I never can because of my blog x
http://www.ofbeautyandnothingness.co.uk
I think it’s about balance, I’ve definitely found a good balance at the moment! xxx
Twitter can be negative sometimes but wow, I hate Instagram. It feels like such a chore for me. I’m forever taking unintentional then intentional breaks from Instagram like you have with Twitter. Amazing that you’re attempting calligraphy. I’m always in awe when I see people do it so beautifully x
Sophie

I’m still learning and I’m doing okay, but I have a long long way to go haha! xxxx
I don’t feel the same as I used to about Twitter either. The things I loved about it are no longer there, which makes me sad x
I totally agree my lovely, it used to be such an incredible app and I loved it so much! xxxx
The trouble with Twitter for me personally is the drama and negativity I see, especially among bloggers. I don’t spend much time on there. Instagram may be crap for engagement right now but it just feels so much better overall. I don’t see drama, the people are really lovely, it’s just a much nicer place to be. 🙂 x
I totally agree my lovely, I just want to have people around me that inspire me, that is all that matters to me! xxxx
This is a really interesting post. I haven’t been using Twitter as much as I normally do because I noticed the blogging community had been lacking. There has been so much negative drama recently. I’m glad that you’ve been enjoying learning calligraphy though.
Eve x
Calligraphy is so interesting! I’m loving being able to learn! xxxx
I think a little break from social media full stop is sometimes a good thing – I try and do this at weekends. Calligraphy sounds great fun, I look forward to seeing how you get on! x
Lisa | http://www.lisasnotebook.com
That is such an amazing thing to do to be able to take a break! I think we all need it!xxxx
I completely agree with your points, having a break can be so needed and refreshing sometimes. I love calligraphy too, it’s harder than you think though haha!xx
It’s so hard, but I’m loving it so so much! xxxx
I joined the Twitter blogging community properly about a year back and I remember there being so many chats and so much interaction and I feel like it has lessened slightly but to be honest it’s still my favourite social media! I get a lot of blog referrals from it 🙂 and I adore calligraphy! But I am no good at it at all unfortunately…
Alice Xx
I just wish there were more chats because I used to love being able to interact with bloggers more and more! I’m still learning though! Xxxx
I have always loved instagram – despite the difficulty in growing and gaining engagement I just love the visual aspect of it. Twitter can be harder to keep up with so I can definitely see how it could become overwhelming after a while.
As for calligraphy I have always wanted to try it! It’s actually on my list for future “learn something new” articles to try someday! You’ll have to post some tips and tricks about it as you learn!
I totally agree my lovely! I get so overwhelmed when it comes to Twitter! I’m definitely loving learning, I’ll do a post once I’ve done a bit more my lovely! xxxxx
Taking some time off is always vital. I also felt like Twitter isn’t the same anymore, I remember it was a lot livelier but it feels a bit dead nowadays. I just gave up on Instagram, it’s sooo hard to engage on there and get people to engage back. But I’m glad you find it useful!
I know what you mean my lovely, Twitter used to be such an amazing app, there always used to be some kind of conversation happening! I have really fallen in love with Instagram, it’s taken a while but I’m there! xxxx
I’ve never really used Twitter, to me it just seems negative, maybe it’s just the people I follow. Instagram will always be my favourite social media platform
http://www.ellacharlottejones.co.uk
I love Instagram as I feel more creative on there! xxxx
Even since I started out in 2016 I’ve noticed a big change in twitter. It doesn’t feel as close knit anymore or as a community.
http://littlemissmelanie.com
I know what you mean, it sucks to be honest because of the changes! xxxx
Twitter is a bit of a weird place at the moment – Instagram rules the roost. I personally don’t use either that much (I probably should more), but just don’t want to annoy people with my content.
Amy | hookedonthemusic.com
I feel like it has changed so much over the last few years! xxxx
I think keeping up with social media in general is hard work. Not just messaging but the scrolling and absorbing information, our brains are on overload. It’s so important to switch off every now and then.
Hayley | hayleyxmartin
I totally agree my darling! We all need time to switch off! xxxx
I agree Twitter has definitely changed! I never seem to see chats on anymore of comment threads, it’s all so quiet! I definitely don’t use it like I used too. Sometimes I definitely prefer Instagram despite how annoying it can be with the algorithm! xx
Tiffany x http://www.foodandotherloves.co.uk
I think it is so quiet and the community has changed! xxxx
I much prefer Instagram, mainly I just love sharing photos and having that platform to share them is just fab. Twitter for me is a tricky one, I want to stay on top of the game, so to speak, but sometimes I just don’t feel like I have anything interesting to say! Calligraphy is gorgeous and I would love to learn, sewing/stitching is also something I would love to give a try! Thankyou for sharing x

I know what you mean, lately I feel like I don’t have anything to say and I’m slowly getting there with my calligraphy! xxxx
I completely agree. I feel a little bit of out of place on Twitter now which is sad. It’s definitely not the same as it used to be,
It has changed so much and I’m trying to figure out my place! xxxx
I totally understand your feelings! I miss blogger chats so much but they’re so rare these days that it’s hard to catch one!

I totally agree, I miss the chats so much! xxxx
I completely agree with what you said about the blogging community on twitter lovely. I miss the way it used to be, I miss the chats and support everyone used to give. I hate all the drama on there these days. 🌸✨

I have started to spend time away from social media in general, and it feels like a breath of fresh air. I can breathe again… and then I dive straight back into the smog of it all, ahaha! 21st Century life, amirite?

Sometimes it’s good to take a break away from things.
It makes you realise just how rubbish social media can be sometimes.

It’s such an important thing to do! xxxx
I feel the same way about twitter and the negativity that seems to be surrounding it lately… I’m still trying to find another way of sharing my work online, and I wish I could say the same as you as instagram! I really hope to ‘nail it’ one day! But in the meantime I’ll still schedule posts on Twitter.
It’s taken quite a long time for me to get there with Instagram, but you will get there my darling! xxxx
