Learning To Let Go Of What Other People Think Of Me

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a people pleaser and I never want to upset or let people down or let people down, or have people think badly of me. I’m a worrier, I worry about every little thing known to man and it could literally be the most insignificant thing in the world and I would feel like the world is crashing in on me and I don’t know how to deal with it. The problem with caring about what others think of it you, is it gives other people control over your emotions.

I’ve been going through a phase where I’ve got such heightened emotions and I’ve been overthinking everything down to the last minute detail and honestly it is so bloody draining. However I’ve got to the point where I am thinking about the people whose opinions matter, I mean people on the street who have opinions of me do they really matter?

The answer to that will always be no.

I’ve learned lately that there will always be people who think negatively of you, who will always find a way to try and bring you down, but those opinions are the ones that genuinely don’t matter. They are the people who don’t know you, probably wouldn’t give you a second thought and those are the people I don’t need in my life, and neither do you.

So how am I letting go of others and what they think of me?

Know who is important and who isn’t

I have made my circle slightly smaller lately, I’ve been focusing my energy on the people that matter, the people who are there for me and vice versa and the people who genuinely make the effort. These are the people that I want in my life. The people who keep you strong when you genuinely need it, and these are the people whose opinions I appreciate because they come from a good place.

Making your circle smaller has definitely helped me in the long term because I don’t feel like I need to spread myself so thin or make the effort with people don’t matter.

Know that you are worth the world

I’m still learning my worth if I am honest. I always try to remember to treat myself like I would my best friend, but if I’m honest I am the worst at it. I’m not great at treating myself well. I’m hard on myself, I can be mean to myself -especially when it comes to my ability to do anything, but knowing your worth is so hard. It is an important to remember that you are a ridiculously talented human, who is important and has so much to give the world. Sometimes we all need to be reminded of that, especially on difficult days.

Surround yourself with inspirational people

I am surrounded by the most incredible people. Genuinely. Like I said earlier, I have made my circle a lot smaller lately, because I genuinely do not have time for, but I have surrounded myself with people who make me a better person, who can make me feel stronger and less like I am failing at this game called life. They are also people who make me feel like I can be myself around, I don’t have to put on this mask of strength, I can cry if I need to, laugh until my sides hurt and I know I can trust them. These are the people that I want in my life.

I’m not 100% there yet if I’m honest, but I am working on it. I’m working at letting go of what other people think of me and focusing all my energy on positivity. Let’s be honest, life is way too short to focus on anything other than happiness.

I love this post – it’s hard to not let others opinions affect you, but you are so right that they do not matter. I agree with surrounding yourself with inspiring, kind people really helps. I also have kept my circle smaller lately & it definitely helps to not have to be around the negative energy.
We are all different and all worth it! Thanks for sharing x

Thank you for this post! It’s reminding me that I shouldn’t bother about what people think of me too. I believe it’s all in the mind and you’re right, being with the right people matters. So just keep doing what you’re doing! 🙂

Such a great post. It can be hard letting go of what people think about you isn’t it? But you just have to live your life and let them live yours, life is too short to have negative people in it. Whatever people think about you, that is their problem, not yours!

    Thanks for sharing!

This one hits home! I’m definitely quite a bit of a people’s pleaser myself, and it isn’t always the best for me. I love your tip about thinking about who’s important and who isn’t. It’s so easy to try and be liked by EVERYBODY, but that’s just not how life works. That is probably one of my biggest flaws, trying to get tons of people to like me rather than focus on a smaller, more intimate group! Thanks for this article!

This is such a great post. It’s so hard to let go of what people think of you, isn’t it? I think surrounding yourself with inspirational people is such a great idea. As I get older my circle seems to get smaller and smaller, which I’m learning is perfectly OK.

  • I love this, knowing who matters and who doesn’t is honestly one of the best things ever and it saves your emotions a lot. I’m a huge advocate of having a smaller circle of people who truly mean a lot to you rather than a million acquaintances too. It doesn’t matter if you’re not 100% there yet as long as you’re working on a happier you x

It’s so hard to not let others opinions effect you, but I’m getting better at it now! I used to take things to heart so easily and would feel so downhearted about it! x

Unfortunately, there’s always going to be at least someone who tries to bring you down but it is SO important that you think enough of yourself to ignore them!

  • I’ve always been a bit sensitive to what other people think of me. But I think blogging has made me much more relaxed. You can’t please everyone! x

  • I bloody love this post! I can relate so much – I often try to make people happy at the expense of myself and my mental health, and it really isn’t worth it. With the being said, it isn’t always easy but as you said, life is too short to not focus on happiness! 🖤

This is such great advice. I definitely love the bit about surrounding myself with inspiration people, I have fewer people today than about 5 years ago, and it’s one of the best things that happened. Thanks for sharing this lovely post.

This really hit home for me and I can relate on so many levels. I’m just in practise, I haven’t got to your level yet but I hope one day I can completely reply with “so what?” when I hear “so and so said something about you” and mean it with my whole heart

  • I love that you have been so honest and shared this post darling as I can relate to it a lot. I recently decided that I’m also not going to please people anymore and do whatever I think is best without worrying about their thoughts and views, thank you for this post. Sending you all of my love! 💜

I love love love this post. I’m a bit of a people pleaser (pushover haha) too and have also definitely been taking steps to change this a little too. Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind!

  • It’s something I struggle with at times too. Especially the strangers on the street part. Who gives a fuck what they think? And still this little voice in my head tries to convince me their opinion is the most important in the world.

And can I just say that the pic of you blowing the leaves is so pretty ❤️

  • Boxnip says:

This is one thing that I have always found hard to do. Like yourself, I am a pleaser, I like to make people happy and don’t like upsetting people. It’s hard to find a balance sometimes. 🙂

I have started to have this frame of mind also, but it is still a process. I am definitely only spending time with people that are worthy of that time and make the same time for me too. This is definitely a healthy attitude to have! Thank you for sharing xx

  • This is honestly fantastic advice. I have curated my Twitter and Instagram feeds into only people I want to see and it makes such a difference – there’s very little negativity and so much that makes me smile. I follow lots of body-positive people like yourself too and it makes me feel better about myself.

Such an honest post and so true.
The less you care what people think the happier you are. But of course that’s easier said than done and I don’t think anyone fully stops caring.
