I’m so lucky that I have found a job that I absolutely adore, I work with amazing people who challenge me, make me want to work harder, achieve more and be successful. However, I genuinely struggle with switching off when I am at home. I’m one of those people that really has so much love for my job that I like to immerse myself in everything and when it comes to coming home, work is still on my mind.
I spend all of my time thinking about it, but I need to have balance. So how do I get that?
1. Immerse Myself In A New Hobby
I’ve known French since I was little, my nursery taught it and so did my mum, I also did it at GCSE level and passed it with flying colours. Lately because of my anxiety I have been immersing myself in languages again. I have Duolingo on my phone, if you’re not sure what it is, it’s a language app that is free and you can learn all different languages. French is something that I know, so I’m starting off with that, I also know British Sign Language as Mumma Hayward is deaf, so I was taught that too.
2. Boundaries
This one is still really hard for me, because I am really not very good at this. What I mean by boundaries is creating a boundary so I am not constantly worrying about work, having my brain on 24/7 and learning to relax a little more. For me I’m learning to not bring my work home with me, if I need to vent, I will of course with my husband on my way home, but as soon as I walk in the door, it needs to be more about home, my husband and my life rather than work.
3. Let Go Of Mistakes
I’ve said it before, I’m really tough on myself, especially when I make mistakes, but I have a habit of bringing that home with me, and then I overthink everything and it is basically this whole hamster wheel that I can’t get off. I’m learning to accept those mistakes, learn from them and let go of them, holding onto them on holds me back, it stops me from being the best version of myself and it keeps me thinking of work rather than chill time at home with my husband!
4. Take Time For Myself
I’ve been very aware of the fact that I need to have more chill time and I need to make more time for that, so that is exactly what I am doing. When I get home I’m working out more, doing my yoga (with the rabbit obviously because she comes and sniffs around me) making more time to not be on my computer and burning candles. It is the small things that make the biggest difference for me, taking that extra time away from my social media, away from the blog and making more time for me has really helped.

Great tips. Working from home it makes it hard to have that balance. I don’t know when to switch off from work x

These are great ideas!
I think it’s important to know how to switch off from work and spend your free time looking after yourself.
I love learning new things and pampering myself but feel I can only relax once the chores are done, so I make sure they’re out the way with first 😊

I’m currently self employed so I don’t really have a work/life balance…x
Love this! Switching off at home can be so difficult when life is so busy and there is so much to steal our attention. Your tips are awesome and I love that you find yoga helpful (with your rabbit). I find it so helpful (with my kittens – who like to get VERY involved) too. I will be trying to create boundaries more after reading your post too! Thank you for sharing! x
Let go of mistakes – love that one. That can needlessly suck up so much time. Great article!
I think the hardest part is always switching off, but the best thing is having something else to focus on such as a new hobby! I also have Duolingo on my phone as I was learning Danish for a little while, miss learning, it’s definitely a lot of fun learning a new language. Overthinking is definitely something I think a lot of people do, and something I do from time to time replaying certain things in my head I could have done differently. Taking time for yourself is super important, because once you’re at your 100% everything else will be too!
Personally, the best tip I can give is to give a sport a try such as running or soccer etc. it’s the best thing to focus on after a long day of work and the best type of challenge.
These are some fab tips and some I need to do well to practise!
Very pretty! I hold onto mistakes. They sit there in my head and nag at me, so I have been practicing being more aware and living more presently instead of lingering in the past.
These are great tips! I have a habit of being really hard on myself and not letting go of my mistakes, so that’s definitely something I want to work on too. Its so important to take time for yourself, which is something that has really helped me, as well. Thanks for sharing! I loved reading this! 🙂

I LOVE duolingo and I’m currently learning French too lol I love these tips because I have a hard time switching from work mode to home mode!
What I do is pray over a candle, light it and meditate or I spend time making a healthy snack for a movie night!
Love these…thank you for sharing! xoxo
Love your post Amie! So true as well very lucky you can surround yourself with positive work colleagues ❤️
Good advice! I have trouble with number 3.
Taking time to yourself is so healthy and just improves your overall mood in life. I agree Amie the smallest things make the biggest difference. I never heard of Duolingo but I like that it’s free. I’m reteaching myself Spanish and this is gonna be so helpful!

A boundary that I used to find difficult was leaving work at work, it’s so easy to bring it all back with you and always be “on”. I feel so much better now that I don’t.

I love the idea of learning a new language, it sounds like a great way to keep your mind busy and switch off from worries & anxiety. Thanks for sharing your suggestions Amie, have a lovely week! <3 xx

I never strike the right balance and it can cause me a lot of stress when I think on it too much. I wish I were more active with my blog like I have been.

Love this post!
I’m lucky as I can (usually leave work at work) but need to work on my productivity at home. I know that for sure…I will do it and then I’ll have a proper answer!
its so hard to create boundaries & switch off isn’t it!
These are great ideas. I’ve really been struggling with the work/life/blog balance at the moment, and sadly my blog is on the back burner. I learned French in Primary school and chose it for GCSE too, I remember some conversational words and phrases but it would be nice to learn more of it again. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂 I usually have a wind down evening on a Wednesday complete with a bubble bath pamper session and scented candles.
