5 Ways Not To Fall Into The Instagram Comparison Trap

I recently fell down the Instagram rabbit hole and I am hating even uploading a photo to my grid. Instagram is probably one of the most gorgeous platforms ever but at the same time it has to be one of the toughest platforms.

In the past it has also been one of my favourite platforms for that reason, however lately, because I have been so busy, I’ve also felt this immense pressure to post all these amazing photos and for it to be all aesthetically pleasing. So, how do you not fall down the comparison rabbit hole?

1. Share posts that make you happy

I have definitely noticed that sharing posts that genuinely bring me joy always makes me so happy. It’s not always about editing it a lot or at all, it can just be a photo that makes you smile and brings you joy. Every post doesn’t have to be picture perfect.

2. Follow people who genuinely bring you joy

I’ve definitely been making more of an effort to follow people who make me want to create amazing photos again. Some of my favourite content creators definitely has to be Dorkface, The Wife Edit Carpe Diem Emmie, Alice Anne, Lady Writes, Ella Was Here, Little Miss Mel & Miel and Mint just to name a few.

3. Don’t feel pressured to upload if you don’t want to or you’re genuinely don’t feel inspired

You don’t always need to upload, I mean I totally get it if it’s your job, you need to earn that coin! That is literally all that matters, but if you don’t always feel like uploading that is okay. Forcing yourself to upload photos can literally make you feel so much worse and can feel like you’re trying to push inspiration and it doesn’t always work like that.

4. Stop worrying about likes

This is normally where I fall down because I’m like, damn why are people not liking my posts, what have I done wrong – but then why would they follow me? It’s such a tough thing, but it’s so important to remember that likes don’t always define you, it doesn’t define your social media, what is important is falling back in love with what you create and what you upload. It’s supposed to be a fun and a space you genuinely enjoy.

5. Remember that pictures don’t always tell the full story

When you see a photo it doesn’t show everything behind the scenes, for example one of my flat lays, it doesn’t always show the disaster that is my room after I’ve taken a photo, the leaves from flowers, petals everywhere and the clean up that I have to go through just to sort everything. But it also doesn’t show what is going on behind the photo. I try to show in my caption what is going on and I feel like that tends to help. I’m brutally honest with my captions.

At the end of the day social media is supposed to be fun, I’ve talked about it a lot but when it comes to social media do what makes you happy. It’s never about the likes and if you’re not enjoying, just take a step back, sometimes we all need to do that.

This is the perfect type of positivity I needed this morning! I’ve really started to learn rule number 2 recently, both personally and through my blog.. I’m slowly filtering through my feed and anytime I feel any negativity it’s unfollow.. great post, thanks so much❤️

It’s so easy to fall into! I have a love/hate relationship with Insta. Some pretty good advice there 🙂

Couldn’t agree more with your points here! It is so hard at times not to compare to others on Instagram, isn’t it? I always try to think, but this is just a snapshot and what they want to portray…it probably isn’t a true reflection of what is happening.

Also couldn’t agree more with the lovely Instagram profiles you shared here!

    Thanks for sharing!

I am guilty for constantly looking for likes! One thing I am much better at is not posting everyday just because I need to, I just post as and when I feel like it! xx

I’m having a real love-hate relationship with Instagram at the moment. I only upload when I want to right now unless a PR/Brand have particularly asked me to post on IG. I have experimented with paying to promote my IG posts twice lately and the difference in the number of likes/impressions etc is quite a lot. Like over 1100 likes on the promoted post and around 80-150 on non promoted. That was paying £10 – £2 a day for 5 days.

I feel that IG WANTS to force us into paying to promote. I just feel like it’s a constant competition for likes and engagement. I sometimes think that getting decent engagement is due to a lot of people still being in comment pods.

Either way, I don’t actually get much traffic to my blog from IG, so it’s not THAT important – I should remind myself of that more often. It’s supposed to be a photo-sharing network with short, snappy captions. I hardly can ever be bothered to read long-winded reviews – I prefer to do that on a blog post. I hate writing them too.

Sorry I’ve waffled on *facepalm* you make some really good, valid points though and I agree with them all! 😀

I really needed to read this today. I am guilty of falling into the Insta G trap, though it’s a cycle I’d like to stop. One thing I often remind myself is that the app is a highlight reel, and not akin to real, authentic life. Thank you very much for sharing!

I have an unhealthy relationship with a lot of things but luckily Instagram isn’t one of them! I only upload when I fancy it and only if it’s a photo I’m 100% happy with. I rarely compare myself to others on there x

  • I seem to have fallen in love with Instagram during April, for the first time so love that you have shared these tips. Sending you all of the love beautiful. 🌸💜

This is a great reminder and something we all need to hear! I think everyone has a love/hate relationship with Instagram. I love seeing everyone’s holiday photos and sharing our own but I hate the pressure of showing tourism boards how many followers and likes we have as a definition of “success”. Hopefully, with posts like this, true engagement wins and not the follow/unfollow game. Thanks for sharing!

  • Lady Writes says:

It’s so so hard not to compare isn’t it, but equally important to avoid it as much as possible x

  • Sarah says:

I think this post is super important! It’s so easy to see all these popular instagrams posting amazing pictures and getting discouraged with your own. But like you said, always post what makes you happy!
I especially like your point of following people who bring you joy 🙂

  • Emma Rankin says:

I dont have an instagram niche, as much as other bloggers look amazing, mine is just my real life

  • shelley says:

I decided to stop worrying about my theme & just post what I want!

  • Great reminders! We spend so much time on social media that it’s easy to think that it’s the real world.

  • It’s so hard not to fall into that comparison trap, I’m actually finding that I’m trying to follow more accounts like mine – or art related to keep me inspired. It’s way nicer to be online when you aren’t dealing with fomo or comparison problems x
