8 Ways To Work On Loving Your Body

Loving your body can be so tough, it is a relationship that takes forever to build and can take seconds to destroy. In a world where people always have something to say about your body and the way that you look, it can be difficult to build a positive relationship with yourself.

I mentioned on social media the other day that I had had some vile comments about my body and the way I look and I really want to make a turning point in the way I feel about myself and more importantly feeling comfortable in my own skin.  So what am I doing to work on that?

01. Remember our weight doesn’t define us

Numbers don’t define who we are, what we can do or the kind of person we are. If we think by changing out body it will change our worth it is honestly such a destructive mindset. By hating our body we are wasting our time and energy and not treating ourselves the way we should, which is with kindness.

02. Stop wishing to be someone else

I remember not so long ago, people used to share a lot of ‘fitspo’ but if there is one thing that I’ve learned over the last few years it is that it is dangerous. The way you pose, and relaxed can change the way that your body can be perceived. Your body is the only one you get, and by wishing to be someone else, you’re overlooking all the incredible things your body does for you on a daily basis. Your body should be your best friend.

03. Speak words of positivity to yourself

I’m very guilty of this, because I see imperfections, and I feel like I can’t be positive about the way that I look because I don’t fit the regular beauty standards, I’m plus size, I have large pores, my skin isn’t perfect, I have cellulite and I’m not perfect. But those imperfections make me who I am.

04. Give your body the care it deserves

I’m definitely the kind of person that doesn’t always give my body the care it deserves. Your body keeps you going everyday, and taking care of it is so important. This includes making sure you drink enough water, you eat enough, you don’t deprive yourself, and you get enough rest.

05. Unfollow creators that don’t make you feel confident

I’ve done this a lot lately, I’ve been unfollowing Instagram accounts, and only following users that make me feel incredibly confident. One user that comes to mind is Leah from Devoted To Pink. I’m lucky to call Leah a friend and the way she has gone about sharing her self love and body acceptance journey is incredibly inspiring. Following users that make you feel confident, accepted and don’t make you feel pressure to change your body.

I unfollowed popular influencers and I feel better.

06. Connect with your body

I’ve been working on my internal relationship with my body through mediation and yoga. I notice a massive definitely when I workout, meditate and practice my yoga, I feel more connected to my body and it makes me feel so good about myself. It also makes me realise all the incredible things my body can do, being able to flow through yoga poses, focusing on my breathing and just feeling strong.

07. Ignore the people who make negative comments

People who make negative comments are honestly not worth the time of day, there will always be people who make negative comments about everything. But when they do make a comment, what good does their comment do to you? Negative comments do not add anything to your life and just drain you, you do not need it in your life. You need to remember what an incredible person you truly are, and you area beautiful person.

08. Be patient, loving your body doesn’t happen overnight

This one is tough for me because I’m not the most patient person in the world, and there will always be days when you don’t feel confident. There will also be days when you feel negatively towards yourself, but it is important to remember that these days won’t last forever and taking small steps in the right direct are always more important.

Loving yourself definitely takes time, but it will all be worth it in the end, I promise you.

  • I love this! It’s so important to talk positively to your body in order to begin your process of accepting and loving it. I completely agree with all your points, especially connecting with your body and giving it the care it deserves x

  • Speaking words of positivity to myself is something I’ve done lately! I have really bad skin so I find it hard looking in the mirror- I constantly criticise my skincare progress. So now I have started focusing on the positives and just generally being kinder to myself 🙂 lovely post, thank you x

  • Love this Amie! It’s so important to work on your relationship with your body. It can be so difficult – it has for me in the past – but I’m learning to love myself more and more! x

  • Lucy says:

I agree with you on all of this Amie, weight should define us as a person and unfollowing people who don’t make you feel confident is so important to help us love our bodies! x

  • My relationship with my body has been better than it is right now. My wedding has been postponed twice, I’m in limbo with my dress and I just don’t know how to be. It sucks. Some really lovely ideas that I NEED to try and take on!

I found it incredibly helpful to unfollow creators that gave me unrealistic expectations for my own body. Along with having a past with eating disorders, I also have a horrible gastrointestinal chronic illness and tons of food allergies, so working out/eating right doesn’t look the same for me as it might for someone else and I have to give myself grace on that. This plays into the last point you made as well! Love this post and the heart behind it 🙂

All such important messages! For me number one is SO important! I actually dont own scales anymore, as I then become so obsessed with numbers in a dangerous way!

Thank you so so much for sharing this – I really needed this! I’ve struggled a lot with my body image since my son was born not so much because of my postpartum body but because I started suffering from endometriosis shortly afterwards and gained a LOT of weight that I haven’t been able to shift because of fatigue, chronic pain etc. The hardest thing for me isn’t so much my own negativity but that health care professionals keep pushing on me that if I don’t lose weight, I’m going to struggle with X, Y and Z and probably die and leave my son without a mother. (A doctor actually said that to me.) Your post has given me a lot to think about and reflect on what actually works for me. 🙂

I used to work with a confidence coach and one of her mantras was learn to speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend. Hard to implement sometimes though! Love these tips, Amie x

Love this post and the positivity it’s spreading! Learning to not compare myself to others has made the biggest difference in my body positivity!

These are such good tips and definitely ones that I need to implement more of. Over the last few days I’ve had much more of a focus on drinking more water, but in general I’m pretty bad at giving my body what it needs in terms of care, which doesn’t get me anywhere. Loved this.

  • Aaliyah says:

These are some really great tips, one of the things I always do is compare myself to others, even when I don’t realise that I’m doing it and I’m definitely trying to work on it! X

I love this. I get really anaemic now and again from endo, and I’ll not eat for a couple of days, and then when my appetite comes back with a vengeance I worry about my weight. Definitely going to use some of your tips and remember that my body needs all the fuel it can get if I’ve been poorly.

  • Kelly says:

This was definitely a blog post I needed to read. I’ve been feeling super down and deflated about my body recently and concentrating too much on what the scales say! I make sure to follow body positivity accounts on Instagram, it’s so inspiring to see women with bodies like me being super confident!

These are amazing tips! Someone said to me at the beginning of my healthier living journey, that if you make a change to your life (be it exercise, cutting out something etc) and you start thinking ‘how long can I keep this up for?’ it’s potentially not right for you, as it won’t help you in the long run! Listening to your body is so important!

  • I really loved reading this and these are all great tips! As you said it’s a long journey and doesn’t happen overnight, but getting read of bad comments and people that are not supportive of it is a must! I started listening to my body more and with positive affirmations too, which helped a lot! thanks for sharing x

These are all great points! I like to focus on how blessed I am to have the body I do and that I need to cherish and take care of it often as life is unpredictable! I like how your unfollowed some creators that you were thought were draining to your self esteem. I need to do this soon too! Thank you for sharing xx
