Anxiety is a struggle for many of us, so finding coping mechanisms is important to reduce anxiety naturally and to also calm anxiety attacks. I feel like over the last year there has been so many situations involving the pandemic that have caused us to feel anxious.
So here are 8 easy ways to manage your anxiety, calm those anxious thoughts and management techniques you need in your life.
Go outside
I always find getting some fresh air really helps me, going outside, listening to the birds, the sun on your face and to just breathe. Going outside for just a few minutes can help to calm you and give you a fresh perspective and a few moments of calm.
Breathing exercises
I have been using these exercises for so long, mainly because it makes the world of difference when I do. I am lucky enough that on my Fitbit it has the option for relax and to do breathing activities. I also follow the NHS breathing exercises for stress because they also work really well for me, and are perfect if you don’t have a Fitbit!
The breathing exercises really ground me, get me to focus on something else and slow my mind down, which is so important for me with my anxiety.
Speak to someone
Talking about the way you’re feeling can really help, and it is so important to remember that you’re never alone. No matter what the situation is, or what it may be, you have people who love and care about you, and you can get through anything that life throws at you. There is also lots of support online and people you can speak to, whether it is family, friends, loved ones, even support networks, a little help goes such a long way.
Write things down
Not everyone feels comfortable speaking about things, and I know with my own personal anxiety, that it gets in the way of me being able to speak properly, I end up falling over my words and not being able to say what I really need to, so writing it down can really help. Whether it be in a diary, a mood journal, or just a book where you write down all your thoughts and feelings, find something that works for you.
I personally have a passion planner where I write down what has happened in my day, and also have a mood tracker at the back. I track what my mood has been like and if there is anything that causes me to feel more anxious.
Workout
I find exercise really helps me, it keeps me in touch with my thoughts and feelings, and also allows me to get those endorphins going! I have a cross trainer at home and also a trampoline, but even just going for a walk or practicing yoga can really help. Whatever your choice of workout may be, will be perfect for you!
Do something to take your mind off it
When I feel anxious I have a few things that I tend to do to keep my mind occupied, including:
- reading a book
- working on my calligraphy
- writing a blog post
- watching a film
- listening to feel good playlist
- cleaning
- taking a nap
Find out what books I’ve been reading lately
Focus on the here and now
When our anxiety starts, we focus on things that could happen, so the easiest way to do that is by focusing on:
- 5 things you can hear
- 5 things you can smell
- 5 things you can touch
- 5 things you can see
These are the 5 things you can easily focus on during those anxious moments.
Talk to yourself through the anxiety
This is a relatively new technique for me and one that has really been working well for me. You don’t have to say it aloud, it can be in your head, but talk yourself through the anxiety. Some easy prompts can be:
- it is anxiety and you will be okay
- you are strong and it is just a bad day
- you can get through this
- other positive affirmations
