6 Things One Tree Hill Taught Me

One Tree Hill used to be one of my favourite programmes in the world! I used to watch it all the time when it used to be on E4 back in the day. It used to be on when I got home from school and that would be the first thing I’d put on, so now it is on Amazon Prime, I feel like I’ve gone back in time and I’m able to enjoy it all over again.

So what has rewatching One Tree Hill taught me?

1. To never give up on your dreams

When Nathan gets injured after being pushed through a window, even though he was depressed, sad and finding comfort in all the wrong places, he finally found a way back to basketball. It is something he really wanted to do and he didn’t stop until he got back to where he wanted to be.

At the end of the day, you are the architect of your own destiny, even though some things that can get it in the way, the way you deal with those things are important. The good, the bad and the ugly. You can achieve everything you want.

2. You are not the not labels people put on you or you put on yourself

If you remember that infamous photo of Brooke standing in front of the projector with labels all over her. That part of the programme was so hard for me to watch. We all unintentionally put labels in ourselves and others around us, but we are more than that. Seeing someone for 5 seconds and making a judgement doesn’t mean you know them, you know their story or what they are going through. As for the labels that we put on ourselves, they are even harder to deal with because we are harder on ourselves more than anyone else.

3. You should always make time for the people you love

When Keith is killed by Dan, it is honestly one of the most heart breaking moments in the entire programme, especially because you later find out later in the programme that Karen is pregnant. When Keith dies, it makes you realise how important it is to make time for the people you love because you never know when will be the last time you speak to the person you love.

4. Bad things always happen to good people

The amount of awful things that happened to Peyton, Keith being killed by his own brother, Quentin being killed, I mean all of those things were absolutely awful, and so many of the characters were dealt some of the worst hands in the world. But Quentin’s mum was honestly such a shining light for me, her strength was absolutely inspiring, the way that she dealt with it with grace and dignity.

Bad things are always going to happen, and I’m learning to deal with them in a bitter way, and learn how to react to certain things especially with my anxiety.

5. You never know what is going on in someone else’s life

I’ve touched on this in the above, however, you never fully understand what is going on in someone else’s life. They might have a smile on their face, but you never know the pain behind their eyes. Look at Jimmy Edwards, he was in such a difficult place, and felt like everyone else had moved on with their lives and completely forgotten about him. Never forget about the people that have helped you to get to where you are right now – make time for these people.

6. The family you chose can mean more to you than your blood family

Brooke’s parents don’t ever seem to want to know her, they just seem to buy her off with a credit card when all she really wants is her parents love and affection. However, she found her family in her friends, Lucas, Nathan, Haley and Peyton, they became her family and meant more to her than her parents. I have some the greatest parents in the world, including my step parents, some parts of my family are questionable, but as long as I have the right people around me, that is literally all that will ever matter to me.

You know I never actually watched this – not because of any particular reason, it just didn’t show up on my radar at the right moment. Reading this, and the fact it is on Amazon Prime, however, might mean that is about to change because this makes it sound amazing. Awesome post!

I love the lessons because it’s so important to keep these things in mind. Confession time – I have never seen One Tree Hill. Pretty sure I’ve never seen a short video about it too. Maybe I’ll give it a shot if I can find it somewhere online her in the Netherlands. 🙂

One Tree Hill was also one of my favorite shows back in the days! I love how you wrote about all the things you learned from the programme. The most important thing I learned from the show is #1. Never give up on your dreams. It was amazing to see all the characters go through so much pain and continuously grow in their careers and personal life. But honestly, I just loved the lucas/peyton love story ❤

  • I really do not want to admit that I’ve never seen One Tree Hill. However, after reading this post I really do feel like I am missing out on something. I am going to have to check it out!
