Finding Confidence In Front Of The Camera

It’s been over a year since I first decided to get in front of a camera rather than behind it and I’ve learned so much about being in front of the camera, and let’s be honest it has been such an incredible learning curve. Now I’m not saying that I’m a pro, trust me, I still have a lot to learn but I’ve managed to learn a lot in that year and to be honest, I feel like my photos have changed since then and I’ve definitely changed as a person through all those photos.

When I was younger my mum would pretty much take photos all the time and I had a lot of confidence, then when my mental health went downhill and my confidence plummeted to say the least. Getting in front of a camera was literally my own personal nightmare. I’m not that person now though, I’ve grown so much since then.

I have always been quite awkward in my photos, I mean if you see some of the outtakes of some of my photos it definitely comes across, but the more that I’ve done it, the more I’ve felt like I’m coming into my own. I feel like everything I’ve learned, I’m now putting into practice! So what exactly have I learned?

1. Shut The World Out

As an awkward person, I struggle as it is but having people around me honestly sets me off, I over think an entire situation and before you know it I’ve talked myself out of all the photos because I can’t just let go of what others might be thinking about me.

2. Have fun

Now I normally have my husband who shoots my photos, however Michelle from Petite Tea Lover took some photos for me (see above) and I loved them so much. She made me feel ridiculously comfortable made me loosen up a bit and just have fun and I think that is exactly what you need when it comes to photos.

3. Show your personality

I always love photos where you can see what a person is feeling, Michelle actually captured one photo which I actually adore so it’s my profile photo on everything, I think it shows me as a person and it also shows my smile.

4. Step outside of your comfort zone

Now I was so far out of my comfort zone this time I didn’t know what was going on, but do you know what it worked wonders, I felt amazing and looking over the photos, I felt like I had photos that made me feel amazing in front of the camera.

5. Don’t let anything hold you back

As a plus size young woman I always thought that being in front of the camera wasn’t for me because I was plus size, now I know that is wrong. I only ever see people who are slimmer on the front of magazines and I never felt like I was represented. Now I’m blogging I finally feel represented, I feel like I’ve found my spot, I’ve found my joy and I’ve found somewhere that makes me feel comfortable & that makes me feel more confident.

What tips do you have for getting in front of the camera? Let me know!

I HATE getting in front of the camera. I started to gain a little bit of confidence early last year and would feel ok on IG stories but then I got sick, had to take steroids and due to all the side effects, the moon face, losing my hair etc, it really knocked my self-esteem and confidence and I have slowly been trying to gain that back.

I think the thing is we only think other people are looking at us and thinking things when we’re having photos taken when in reality, they probably couldn’t give a flying fig what we’re doing. I think we should definitely try to worry less about what everyone else ‘might’ be thinking and just try and let go and have fun with it. Easier said than done, I know! x

I love this post! And I love the photo, you look so happy 🙂 I can definitely relate to feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera. I love love love photography and have been doing a lot of senior portraits lately, and I’m so comfortable with that, but then as soon as the camera is turned on me, it’s terrifying for some reason! I appreciate your tips, because I definitely want to have more photos of me as memories so it’s time to stop being scared of the camera 🙂
