6 Tips For Surviving Social Media

Let’s be honest when it comes to social media, it is actually a battleground, whether it is drama, opinions that people don’t agree with, there is always going to be someone there to call you out, I mean it is tough. Social media is an incredible thing, it can connect us to so many different and incredible people and I’m beyond grateful for that, but sometimes when it comes to social media there is always a negative side to it. Over the last few weeks I’ve been coming up with a post for surviving social media.

Now over the last 3 years I’ve had my fair share of negative comments, I’m not gonna lie but the thing you need to remember is the fact that this is your social media and it is your decision who you follow and what you do! So what are my tips?

Use That Mute & Unfollow Button

I mean I know it isn’t pleasant because in all honesty unfollowing someone is normally a big decision for me, I’ll only unfollow someone when it is a continuing situation – hence why I try to use the mute button as much as possible. But when someone is upsetting you, triggering you, making you unhappy, then unfollow them, mute them. Do what makes you happy.

Surround Yourself With Positive Influences

I follow some of the most incredible people in the world, these are the people who inspire me to be a better person, to keep creating, and to continue to push myself out of my comfort zone. Not only that these are the people who literally pick you up when you are struggling, when you’re in a tough space. These are the people we appreciate and having them around makes social media easier.

Have Time Away

I actually wrote a blog post not so long ago about needing time to switch off, because it really is so important. When you’re on social media all of the time, it can be so draining, you get so consumed with what is going on online that you forget to just take some time away. I actually decided to take a little more time away, not worrying so much about updating Twitter, scheduling my tweets and that is it. Uninstall the app if you are like me and literally feel the urge to check it. It makes life easier!

Always Be Yourself

It’s simple really isn’t it? Be yourself? Not so much, I personally find that on social media I can be myself more, whereas if I’m meeting you in person, I get quite anxious and I can end up being a little shy, but regardless of that, I’m always myself. I try to share my personality which is bubbly with the people who follow me, and of course my love for cats and my rabbit, but I’m  definitely trying to be me.

Try Not To Take Trolls Comments To Heart

Now that is easier said than done, but there is always going to be someone who is trying to bring you down, who will try and upset you, but you’re incredible, you’re a strong person and these people probably don’t even know you. Those people don’t matter, they’re not the kind of people you need in your life or near your social media.

Block, Block, Block.

Now I very rarely block people, however last year I had a run in with someone who trolled me for my size, I blocked them, I didn’t even mention it on my Twitter, as I personally didn’t want that kind of negativity in my life, but I blocked them. They were rude and pretty damn vile. The tweets got taken down, and the account disappeared too. Don’t feel guilty for blocking someone, honestly.

Completely agree with all of these, especially taking time away. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with all of it and it’s vital to keep some balance.

Exactly, social media can honestly be so intense but there is life outside of social media! xxxx

Some great advice. I’m super lucky and I honestly really haven’t had much negativity at all and I hope that continues. But I think as your following gets bigger so does the scrutiny and amount of people that just want to be dicks. Which sucks. Why can’t eveyrone just be nice.. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Great post Amie! 💗

I use the block feature like it’s going out of fashion ahaha, I definitely don’t have a problem with that! I love your point about taking a break away from social media, because I totally need to do that more. It really feels like your blog progress will decrease during time away, but I should remind myself that mental health comes first!

I’m the same to and that is such a good point my darling! Sometimes you’ve just got to put yourself first and do what is best for you my darling! xxxx

  • Good advice. Though I don’t mute.. if someone’s offensive, I unfollow or I go and block them so that they won’t be able to see/comment on my tweets any further. Life’s too short to worry over social media trolls’ hurtful words.

I totally agree, I’m someone that wears my heart on my sleeve, but I’m learning to be stronger! xxxx

  • What wonderful advice! I am a retired social scientist and spent a great deal of time researching and reporting on the emotional impact of social media. It can be a very dangerous thing if not governed properly. These tips are a great start for that😍❤️✌🏻

  • Alys says:

I totally agree with these. Taking time away is so important, especially to be able to keep a healthy balance with ‘real’ life. The point you made about being consumed with online life made me think: I don’t want to become that person who lives through their social media and curates a perfect online life that makes me more unhappy. That seems to be a thing that happens a lot these days and it’s sad seeing people go that way. Great post Amie! xx

I love this post. Social media can really bring you down sometimes without you even realising it just because of all the negativity! People can often be so rude and ignorant when they are behind a screen too and sometimes being the bigger person and leaving them to it is so difficult. You’re completely right, sometimes we need to remember to take time away and not be ashamed to unfollow/mute/block. Thank you for this post
