The other day I wrote a post about social media anxiety and ways you can combat it and since then I’ve been thinking a lot about detoxing my feed. Mainly because I need to do it for my own mental wellbeing and to make sure that my feed inspires me, and doesn’t leave me feeling really anxious or wanting to avoid my social media. Social media is supposed to be fun, and at the end of the day, social media isn’t everything in life, you should be able to go on and be surrounded by inspiring people.
Lately I have been unfollowing people slowly but surely, I don’t want to cut so many people out of my feed so quickly, because in all honesty people have bad days, but I’m detoxing people from my feed that are just plain rude or potentially triggering me.
There are other reason I unfollow people, some of them mainly because we don’t talk anymore, they play the follow/unfollow game (I have not got time for that to be honest) or I just don’t relate to them anymore. I honestly get that, I mean I have unfollowed people because I don’t relate and they have gone in a different direction, I of course wish them the absolute best, but it isn’t something I would necessarily read or want to read about.
Blogging is so diverse, there is something for everyone to read, there is a blog for literally every interest! Anyway back to the unfollowing situation.
I’ve had people unfollow me and I’m not gonna lie, some of them do hurt me, because I thought we were friends, but it’s okay, I’m not gonna call them out on it, there is literally more to my life than that. I love following new people, not to get them to follow me back, but so I can see what they do & support them as much as I can. I love following small bloggers and seeing them grow, mainly because I feel like I can relate to what they write about, what they do and just who they are and that is the kind of thing I want on my feed.
Social media is literally part of our everyday, at the touch of a button we are online, it isn’t like when I was a teen, our phones didn’t actually go online without it taking about an hour to load, my good old Sony Ericsson Walkman and having to go on Bebo from home. We can wake up in the morning and just unlock our phones and there is an app. It makes it so easy to access it, as it is that accessible, we need to be surrounded with inspiring influences, people who inspire us to be better bloggers, people, and just allow us to enjoy social media and what we do!
If someone unfollows you, at the end of the day there are so many amazing people out there who will see what incredible work you produce, what incredible things you do in the blogging world. Don’t let it get you down, you’re incredible just the way you are, keep blogging, unfollow people who trigger you, who bring you down, who don’t leave you feeling positive, and free your feed!
What are your thoughts? Do you relate? Let me know in the comments!

Like what you’ve read? How about we become social media friends?

I completely agree, negativity on social media can be so draining. I find that creating lists on Twitter really helps to keep up with all my favourites and an unfollower app helps remove people who are just playing games. Your comment about Bebo and the Sony Walkman made me smile – those were the good old days. I don’t remember anyone playing the unfollow game on MySpace, ha ha! Great post Amie 💖 xx

Oooh that is such a good idea with the lists, I might look at doing that actually! Those were the days when thing seemed so easy, nowadays it seems so hard! Thank you so much angel! xxxx
This post is really talking to me after the blog drama last week!! I had to unfollow and mute so many people to keep my feed feeling positive! It IS ok to unfollow!
I think it is important to do what is best for you angel, social media can be difficult sometimes, making sure your feed is positive is important! xxxx
I totally agree, I don’t think anyone needs to justify unfollowing someone. I’ve had people unfollow me and I’ve been a bit meh about it because I don’t understand why but whatever! It’s important we look after our own wellbeing online so if I was unintentionally triggering someone and that’s the reason they unfollowed, I’m fine with that xxx
Our own online wellbeing is so important and we need to make sure we put ourselves first & make sure that our online world makes us feel comfortable! xxxx
I agree so much. Why waste time on someone who yo don’t know that unfollows you.
It’s annoying when people just follow and unfollow, but it’s important to just do your own thing and do your own thing on social media! xxxxx
In my opinion, this type of social media cleanse is absolutely necessary for better mental health. The internet can be so toxic and we need to consistently filter out the negativity.

I totally agree, I’ve been doing it because I need to do what is best for me and I feel like others could benefit too! xxx
I’ve recently done a blog post about unfollowing people also babe so I can totally relate to this blog post. I really adore how well-written and honest you’ve been. Thank you for being so open and sharing 🌸✨

It is so important to just unfollow people who don’t bring you happiness, it’s important to surround yourself with positive influences and that is what I’m currently doing! xxxx
I completely agree! I’ve been doing the same – if I don’t relate to someone anymore I tend to unfollow, for example if they started as a beauty blog and have since had a baby and switched to parenting, good for them and I still support them but I’m not a parent so I just don’t relate and that’s fine! I personally would want my following to be genuinely interested in what I’m writing & posting about and now just following because they always have done, so I’d like to think other bloggers are the same xo

I think it is so important to detox your feed and follow people you would relate to! xxxxx
I completely relate, I’m going to spend the next few days detoxing my own feed and only follow people who actually inspire me or that I can draw inspiration from, rather than making me envious. I only look at Instagram/Twitter occasionally and don’t have notifications on, which can actually really help – it makes you only look at your feed when you want to, rather than making you anxious that no-one’s liking your photo.

Turning off notifications is something I’m going to do, I think I definitely need to do that more! xxxx
I used to let it get to me, but now my outlook is this:
“the people who mind don’t matter, the people who matter don’t mind.” I think Dr. Zeus said it, but it sums it up in a nutshell! i’m aware that, now my IG and blog is growingly more focused on my crafts and Harry Potter, it will alienate some people… but it’s ME. It’s what i want to share and it makes me happy. Isn’t that more valuable than any number of likes or follows? It’s what truly matters.

Amen sister! I think that is so important to remember, and at the end of the day as long as you’re doing you, who cares?! Your blog is incredible! xxxx
I sometimes feel guilty for unfollowing but it is actually really important to protect yourself, it really can be toxic! Social media is obsessive and very draining at times! Thanks for the post, interesting read xx

I totally know what you mean my lovely, but honestly you should always do what is best for you! I’ve muted some people for my own mental health! xxxx
