5 Habits To Promote Positive Mental Health

I’ve been incorporating a few different habits to promote positive mental health. This is especially important given the days have got shorter, and especially since the temperature is dropping too. So what are my favourite habits to implement to promote positive mental health? I’ve got you covered with a few to get you started.

Make plans

We all live our lives at about 100 miles a minute, so making sure we have things to look forward to can really help. It doesn’t have to be a massive life event, it can something small like:

  • meeting up for a walk with a friend
  • catching up over a coffee
  • a pamper session
  • seeing someone you’ve not seeing for a while
  • going out for dinner
  • planning a movie night at home.

Plans don’t have to cost a lot, if anything. It is much more about time and being around others. Something to look forward to really helps me and can really help me to move into a more positive head space.

Get some rest

Sleep and rest is incredibly important and a good sleep routine can really help. I know when I have an awful night’s sleep that it puts me in a bad headspace and I cannot focus. A good night’s sleep starts with a good routine. This is something that I’ve learned personally and has taken me such a long time to hone. My routine includes:

  • a shower
  • a good skincare routine
  • a dark room
  • a good sleep masks
  • a memory foam pillow
  • a pillow spray
  • reduced screen time before bed.

Finding what works for you though is different for everyone, but the main thing for me is limiting the time on my phone. Instead I’ll read a book about an hour before bed and it works wonders.

Physical activity

Exercise is really important in my everyday life, whether it is a walk for 10 minutes, getting on my cross trainer, or just doing some yoga, it helps. If I’m feeling anxious, or if I have had a stressful day, then a workout at the end of the day helps me to:

  • clear my head
  • process the day
  • express how I’m feeling
  • and cope better with stress.

It all depends on what works for you, you could instead doing some stretches. Find what works for you. There isn’t a one size fits all.

Ensure you say positive affirmations

Sounds corny I know, but let’s be honest positive affirmations can truly make the world of difference. I’ve got a bookmarked post of mine for when I’m out and away from home that makes the world of difference, as well as my Instagram. I also set up my own Instagram hashtag #findingpositivitydaily which I absolutely love scrolling through to see everyone’s amazing positive posts.

It creates such an important space for positive posts, especially because social media can be tough, so creating a positive space can truly make the world of difference.

Don’t forget to use it on your hashtag list!

Do something for yourself

This is so important, and you really need to listen to yourself. Listen to what your body is telling you. Whether you need to take a break, or doing something you love, what is important is you taking a break and some time for yourself.

Sometimes we push ourselves to do thing because we know they need to be done. But sometimes, we truly need to say no. We are human beings and we need to know our limits and boundaries.

The brightest stars may burn the fastest, but by doing more for yourself, and taking better care, we can ensure we don’t burnout.

These are my top tips, have you got any positive habits that you like to use? Let me know in the comments.

Getting outside more is really helping me at the moment. I tend to hibernate like a bear in the winter and I don’t want to do that this year esp with a new baby xx

Doing self-care is great in helping positive mental health, just doing any small task for yourself to help yourself is so important! x

Getting outside is a really big one for me. We’re in Copenhagen at the moment and the days are so much shorter than they were where we live in Bedford lol. Getting out even for a lap of the block is something I try to do everyday. Doesn’t always work – on the days I know it’s going to be a problem I try and stand near the windows lots – I’m not sure it necessarily makes a difference but maybe helps a little

  • I find making plans really helps centre me and keep focused

Getting outside for some fresh air really helps me, even if it’s raining! I also find that the smaller plans like meeting a friend for coffee are the ones I look forward to most!

Doing something for yourself is such a big one for me. Life can get so hectic especially with two littles, I think it’s important to have your own time for your own mental health.

  • I enjoyed reading your list. The hardest thing is going to bed early. I always feel like I need time to unwind but it soon gets late,

  • Making plans and having things to look forward to does WONDERS for my mental health!

  • Getting outside has been my key to better mental health. I can get stuck at my desk and wonder where the day is gone and then it’s the same day after day. Carving out time to nip out for half an hour makes a world of difference

I think you have a great list here Amie. A good night routine is what I usually need because I often overdo it and stay up late. Generally I try to remain physically active and take rest when I feel like it is needed.

  • Richie says:

    Hi Amie,

Those are some excellent habits, for sure. I think some form of physical activity is hugely valuable – as you say, it doesn’t have to be anything extensive, it could just be a 10 minute walk, but you feel better for it almost immediately.
