Instagram has got to be one of the toughest platforms in the world, just to get some traction on. One minute you feel like you’re getting somewhere with it and next Instagram is like nope you can’t have too much success with it and it bats you back down. I’m pretty sure I lose hours of my fay just scrolling through Instagram, liking posts, trying to engage and comment on people’s posts, I basically try to cram in Instagram time everywhere I can.
One thing to remember though while scrolling through, Instagram only shows the best bits of people’s lives.
While scrolling through all of the aesthetically pleasing photos it’s the thing you forget isn’t it? That it just shows the best bits, the carefully curated photos, but doesn’t always show the whole picture. From the carefully selected hashtags, to the props in a photo, to way you edit the photo, everything has been thought out to the last detail when posting a picture.
Let’s be honest here, no one is going to want to see the person that has had about 3 hours sleep, had coffee for breakfast and basically wants to hide under a duvet and forget the day. That is me pretty much 99.99% of the time.
When it comes to my Instagram though I try to show the best of both worlds, just because there is a nice photo, I try to show more of myself through the caption. I kind of did that on Wednesday. If you didn’t see it I have basically been in a really difficult headspace over the last few weeks. I’m trying to see it as a case of the January blues, but it has genuinely been difficult and I’ve struggled so much.
I can sit there for ages and compare my life, especially my Instagram to others, maybe if I was this, maybe if I was that, maybe if I did this differently – I am that person that overthinks pretty much everything in every way and yes I’d probably forget my head if it wasn’t attached to my head.
It is so easy to get wrapped up in such a tiny little app, I’m definitely guilty of spending hours trying to get the right shot only to hate every one of them, lose the light and say screw it and hide under a duvet.
Don’t always believe that every photo you see that basically has the perfect everything is the entire story. It is literally a snapshot in time. It doesn’t show everything. Even the perfect flat lays, it doesn’t show what is going on behind the lens.
Behind the Instagram and behind all the photos there is a person, they might be using it as a creative outlet, a way for them to enjoy social media, or even as a way to just get away from what they’re feeling. Lately I’ve been using it as an escape – just a creative outlet and to support the people that I follow on there as much as possible.
This definitely turned into a bit of a rant but I feel like I got my thoughts across – kind of.
Just to finish, when it comes to Instagram though, it’s so important to remember that it is just an app. It isn’t the be all and end all. Your worth is never defined by an app, the quality of your photos or the caption that you use. Instagram is just a platform, and what you create is incredible!

Ah girl.. I find Instagram so difficult too. I’m not the best photographer by any means so my pictures just get lost on there. I’m going to make an effort to keep posting though no matter what. That’s real life and that’s what I want to see! Thank you for the rant… it made me feel less alone with my thoughts about this!
Honestly whatever you post is genuinely incredible do your thing, enjoy the process and keep going! Xxxx
Ah man I know what you mean! I think as long as you remember it’s a highlight reel, it’s ok. Because I keep that in mind I never find myself comparing too much.
Have a wonderful Christmas!

I have a love/hate relationship with Instagram – sometimes I love it, other days I think to myself why am I just scrolling through this app when I could be doing other things like writing or seeing friends.
Zoey | https://www.zoeyolivia.com
I do the same too, I think we are all guilty of it sometimes! xxxx
I have grown to love the picture perfect feeds on instagram, once you understand they are simply a glimpse of perfect rather than the reality they can be so much more enjoyable. I like to keep reality to the stories, my no makeup face and rantings belong on there – not the feed lol
Erin || MakeErinOver
I love that too, I think as long as you understand that Instagram is just a glimpse that is all that matters! You also learn to enjoy the app even more xxxxx
I have such a love/hate relationship with it – I love scrolling through it and stories but engagement really gets me down and I know it shouldn’t x
http://www.ofbeautyandnothingness.co.uk
I know what you my darling, engagement on Instagram can be so tough! xxxx
I’m so guilty of falling victim to thinking everyone has their life together apart from me when I see perfectly curated feeds! Then I look at the mess of my room every time I photograph a flat lay and realise people have probably thought that about mine at some point. It’s so important to find the balance
It’s totally okay my lovely, but there is more behind the photos and as long as you remember that, that is all that matters my lovely! xxxxx
I so Agree, I really try to take good photo’s but some reason I try not to filter, it just doesn’t look like me anymore, I like to look real. X
I know what you mean my darling! Your posts are genuinely incredible! xxxx
This was a great post to read, Instagram has been so hard for me to gain and it sometimes I get down about it but I actually like Instagram and putting pictures up I’m proud of the followers should eventually come!
Exactly and as long ass you’re enjoying it that is literally all that matters. Your posts are beautiful my darling! xxxx
Very true! Instagram is not people’s reality!
Jas xx | https://thoughtsfromjasmine.co.uk
Exactly, it is literally a snapshot in time! xxxx
I honestly could have written this post, it’s like you’re inside my head! Instagram is so hard to grow on, and the fact you have to spend so much time on there to make any traction means it’s so easy to start believing the images reflect real life. I think you’ve raised some really important points – it’s just an app and while the photos might be pretty, they aren’t the sum total of your worth!
Beth x Adventure & Anxiety
Exactly my darling, it’s important to just enjoy the app, but not let it make you feel like you’re less than because your photos don’t get the likes they deserve! xxx
I CAN RELATE TO THIS POST! Often, I post “perfect” pictures but there’s a lot going on behind closed doors and while I may come across happy and cheerful in my caption or instagram story, I’m probably crying at all the stresses of adulthood.
This line, “Don’t always believe that every photo you see that basically has the perfect everything is the entire story. It is literally a snapshot in time.” something I need to tell myself when I’m comparing myself to other bloggers. This post has made me want to show more of the reality of my life, I’m currently doing a before and after series of my photography on Instagram and I feel there’s a lot of realness in that, I’m showing the imperfect picture then showing the photo I want my followers to see.
Fran | http://www.franciscarockey.co.uk
I’m exactly the same my darling don’t worry! If people saw my day to day life, it is very different from what people see on Instagram although I really do try with my Instagram stories! xxxx
Ahhh, I’m guilty of comparing myself to others on Instagram. I just can’t seem to help it, you’re definitely right that sometimes you have to remember its just an app!
Kayla ♥︎ http://www.kaylajayne.co.uk
Exactly, comparison is genuinely the thief of joy and an app should never make you feel down or less than! xxxx
So important to remember that it’s just a snapshot and I think everyone has compared themselves or taken the whole Instagram thing too seriously! Really like that you captions capture more of a reality and truth too, credit to you for that xx
I really try with the captions because I feel it helps to show the other side of everything! xxxx
I love posts like this!! I’ve really fallen out of love with instagram, I hate the pressure to be perfect all the time and stopped posting for quite a long time. It is just a tiny moment in time, but we all try to make it look as perfect as possible and it’s so draining! x

I know what you mean my angel, it really is, but I hope you start posting again and just enjoy the process xxxx
Another amazing post, Amie. And you’re so right. It’s so easy to get caught up in Instagram and comparing ourselves to others x
It really is so easy to compare ourselves, but as long as you enjoy creating that is all that matters! xxxx
This is such a fab post! 🙂
For me I’ve found quite recently that the more perfect a pic is the more it screams to me ‘this is not real life’ so I guess I’m all good on that score. I love to see picture perfect photos as much as the next person but I also love to see the reality too. Lately, I have found I spend more time going through IG Stories more than I do through my feed. I think that’s because on Stories it is usually just more real. Things aren’t posed or filtered. It’s usually rawer and I like that. 🙂
Sarah 🌺 || Boxnip
I’ve definitely been trying more with IG stories, but I’m not that confident, but I’m definitely trying more and more! xxxx
Ahh you hit the nail on the head.
It’s important to remember that Instagram is only what someone wants you to see and not to be compared to.
Great topic!
http://littlemissmelanie.com
Exactly, it’s also so important to remember that your content doesn’t need to be compared to others, it’s incredible! xxxx
It’s terrible, I got dressed today to take pictures for my blog and I stand then I took my make up off and put my pjs back on!! Xx
And that is totally okay my darling, there is always a side story to Instagram! You don’t always see everything! xxxx
I adore this blog post so much. I am so happy that someone has spoken out about life on instagram and real life. So many people get caught up in instagram and other social media websites that they forget about life happening around them. Great blog post beautiful. 🌸💜
With love, Alisha Valerie x | http://www.alishavalerie.com
Thank you so much my angel! It’s so important to not get caught up in the visuals! xxxx
I can relate to this so much right now!! I’m going through such a low period with Instagram right now, I don’t seem to be growing whatsoever and I have no inspiration. By the time I get home from work it’s too dark to be trying to take photos but then when I do have time in daylight hours I have no inspiration. I’m reluctant to force content but I also won’t grow unless I post! So it’s a bit of a catch 22 for me right now! I’m so glad I’m not the only one though! xo
Sian | http://www.siankathrine.co.uk
You’re doing an amazing job with your Instagram my angel! I love what you do so much! Don’t forget how amazing you are at creating! xxxx
I used to be so addicted to Instagram and found myself taking pictures or thinking about it far too much – thankfully nowadays I’ve lessened my use of it and I feel less needing of validation from the likes etc. It can be easy to get caught up in it all, and I’m glad you use your instagram responsibly and share the highs and lows. I also totally get the way it’s a great platform for creative expression and supporting others. Thanks for sharing as always Amie! xx
I know what you mean my lovely, but as long as you’re happy with what you’re creating, you’re happy with your usage and what you do that is literally all that matters my lovely! Just do you thing and keep going! xxxx
I’m fully guilty of comparing myself to other instagram accounts which is why I no longer have a blog instagram, and I agree with the January blues it’s so easy to be in a bad head space x
Kayleigh Zara 💀🥀Www.kayelghzara.com
That is fair enough my lovely as long as you’re doing what makes you happy that is all that matters my lovely! xxxx
Great post! It’s so easy to get swept up in the comparison isn’t it – I always doubt my instagram even though I know I shouldn’t. Having it as an escape is a great way of thinking about it.
Don’t doubt yourself my darling, it’s just a different way to be creative! xxxx
I think a caption can be better than the photo sometimes! I think we all like to show a better side of our lives on Instagram, not the side of us lazing in bed drinking cups of coffee! A great post! xx
Lucy | http://www.lucymary.co.uk
I try to combine the two, there is always a photo of me with a cup of coffee hahaha! xxx
Instagram is such a mindfuck app. I recently deleted my account and created a new one from a scratch. I don’t know, I felt like all those people following me I wasn’t able to fully be myself (whatever that is, I’m still looking forward to finding out) and now with the new account I can basically post anything I want, at any time I want. Which is why I love IG stories, I can basically do anything out there without effin’ up the feed haha!

I saw that! I’m so glad that you’re back though my darling, I missed your posts! xxx
I loved reading through this post! I definitely have a love/hate relationship with instagram right now, but I’ve recently unfollowed lots of accounts I wasn’t enjoying and it’s made it so much more enjoyable 🙂
Kate | http://www.katelovesx.co.uk/
That is amazing my darling, it’s amazing how it can make you feel so much better! xxxx
I love Instagram, but I always find myself spending so much time making sure the picture I upload is perfect. It’s true that we only show our best selves and I think that everyone has to step back for a minute every day to remember that. We see a lot of things that are not real on the internet and we make them our ideals. I really enjoyed reading your post, you made some good points!
I know what you mean, and nothing is ever perfect, but we should just try to enjoy the platform for what it is ! xxxx
You can get so wrapped up in Instagram, can’t you?! It is so easy to forget that a photo is staged or not even taken that day (could be months ago). I do like the creativeness of it, but do think about any ‘falseness’ that can be portrayed by it. I guess liek you say, a good caption can bring it back to reality.
Lovely thought-provoking post!

A good caption can literally change everything in my opinion, it always makes me feel like I know a person a bit more if I can relate to the caption! xxxx
The more I am on Instagram, the more I dislike it. It seems more and more that the creativeness of instagram and the art of photography is dying. What is popular is what is trendy.
It is important to distinguish between reality and face-tuned insta fantasy.
Laura / https://www.laustworld.com/
I know what you mean my darling, I definitely want to try and be more creative with my Instagram! xxxx
I totally agree with you about Instagram. It is hard to put together a perfect picture, but I kind of like the challenge. It is nice to see a well-put picture or even one that was taken on the spot without much planning. I agree with you about the process of taking pictures. YESS on the fact that your worth is not defined by an app. Social media doesn’t capture the entire picture of your life – just what you choose to share. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Nancy ♥ exquisitely.me
Exactly, it’s just a moment in time and no one should define themselves by one app! It can be a long old process taking an Instagram photo! xxx
Ah, girl. I totally agree with you on this! I think like everyone else, I have such a love/hate relationship with Instagram. However, I do enjoy taking photos and sharing it on my feed. And like Nancy said, which I totally agree with, your worth should not and should never be defined by an app. Share what you want, not because you have to.
☼ cabin twenty-four
I really enjoy it too, I think it’s more about the process and getting creative more than anything! xxxx
I loved this post! I miss just uploading little snapshots of my day, it is something I am going to try and get back into the swing of this year as it’s not meant to be 100% perfect, there are so many people making ‘finsta’s’ (fake insta’s) so they can upload more realistic content but I’d rather just incorporate it in to one feed!
That is such a good point, I’ve been incorporating various things into my Instagram posts and stick to one editing style! xxxx
hey amie ! ahh I totally agree with this post – it’s crazy how we get so wrapped up in a tiny app that only shows a tiny element of everybody’s lives – especially when it’s literally just a highlight reel ! it’s one of the reasons I love the blogging community – it tends to be a lot more * real * , if you know what I mean !
have a wonderful week !
nati x | http://www.a-la-slowed.com
I do know what you mean my darling! There is a good balance in blogging, however it can be difficult to find a balance on Instagram. IG stories really do help! xxx
This is so true! It is that perfect snippet in a chaotic messy life.
Especially if you saw the mess I make trying to take my photos! xxxx
I adore your instagram because the photos are always gorgeous but the captions are honest and raw!! 🙂 xx
Holly that means the absolute world to me! xxxx
My instagram posts are so bad, you can tell they are real haha
Don’t put yourself down my darling! xxxx
I have such a love/hate relationship with Instagram! I find I have phases where I seem to actually get followers and my photos do quite well and other times where I lose 20 followers a day and my photos don’t get seen by anyone. It’s so frustrating. When I get down about it, I just try to remember it’s an app and not a reflection of real life. It’s so easy to get caught up in it all! xx
Tiffany x http://www.foodandotherloves.co.uk
It’s irritating isn’t it? But as long as you don’t give up I think that is the important part my darling! Your posts are amazing xxxx
It’s so easy to get sucked in with Instagram but it’s important to remember that it’s not EVERYTHING x
I totally agree, I’ve been changing up my content lately and I’m much happier with it! xxx
If someone gets you down on Insta, just unfollow them. I follow a lot of food and travel accounts so my feed just makes me smile, hungry or both.
Its the only platform where I dont care about numbers too.
Helen
Tea in the Tub
I love the creative side of it personally. I’ve really got into my editing lately so I’m trying to do that! xxxx
My go-to mantra on IG right now is “love over likes. Choosing engagement – the words – over the silly little number in the bottom right corner. I would far rather have 12 ENGAGERS than 1200 faceless followers, at least that’s what i tell myself when it all becomes overwhelming. You’re so right about taking a step back and allowing the person, not just the photo, to speak too. Thank you for this xx
Bumble and Be
I know what you mean, I love being able to engage with people’s content, it really makes me smile! xxxx
It can be very draining using that app, I always find myself on it many times throughout the day scrolling endlessly. I do really love it as a platform though its just tough to grow sometimes!
Love Vicki ♡ victoriajanex blog
I totally agree with you. every time I plan to make my feed more real I end up panicking over the photo quality still.
Fantastic post! I relate to this so badly. I have a love/hate relationship with Instagram. I love taking photos but feel engagement on Instagram is weak 😦
I do find Instagram really quite challenging sometimes, but I love it too. I equally love taking a break from it too. At the beginning of the year I unfollowed people who were making me feel inferior and rubbish for certain reasons and I now only follow those who leave me feeling positive and I’m inspired by their feeds. I really love engaging on other peoples posts, and I find it far nicer than just liking the photo because I find leaving a thoughtful comment or genuine question is better than just aimlessly liking and scrolling on.
Emily | Snippets of Emily’s Life xx
This is so true, Instagram is just an App at the end of the day and there is no point getting too caught up in trying to have the ‘perfect feed’. I’ve been struggling with Instagram lately, feeling like I’m not good enough at it or not successful enough – but the thing to remember is that as long as we’re enjoying creating the content that’s all that matters. Lovely post 😊
Shannen | https://shannenclaire.co.uk
It’s so easy to find ourselves caught up in the ‘reality’ that someone creates on their Instagram rather than the actual reality… Social media in general is often a highlight reel, showing only the best moments and hiding the struggles that happen in between
My bestfriend literally got rid of insta for like 1 week and said it was the best thing she ever did, i know it’s not real life but it’s hard to detatch yourself from that mindset sometimes i think x
