It’s November, we have less than 2 months left of this strange year, and I feel like we’ve all been trying to find ways to cope during this year. However, it has also been the year that I’ve discovered so many amazing books, authors and genres, and that has really helped me cope this year.
I’ve not read as much as I normally would have done, mainly because work has been so busy, and life has just got in the way, but we are back on it and reading for days! So are you ready to find out what books I loved lately?
The Bigamist By Mary Turner Thomson
I read this book in the space of a day. I loved it so much. It follows the life of a single mother who hasn’t give up trying to find Mr Right, and suddenly Mary finds Will online, and it follows their whirlwind romance, from engagement to deceit, another Mrs Jordan and fraud. Mary is an intelligent and strong woman, yet she is caught up in a massive web of lies that has been created by Will. The book honestly left me so speechless, the web of lies that Will managed to weave, the selfishness he has shown and the hurt that he has caused his many children and wives.
This book is based on a true story, so it is very important to remember that throughout and try to put yourself in that similar position of being hopelessly in love with someone and someone deceiving you like that. There is a new book following this one coming out next year, which I have pre-ordered, so if you enjoy this book, know that the story is far from over.
The Lost Girls Of Devon by Barbara O’Neal
This book follows Lillian, her daughter Poppy, granddaughter Zoe and great-granddaughter Isabel, and as Lillian’s heath declines, Zoe and Isabel return from America to take care of her. However, her caregiver a friend of Zoe’s goes missing, Zoe also has to come to terms with what may happen to her grandmother, whether she is ready to forgive her mother Poppy, and also try to understand what is going on with her daughter Isabel. Isabel is trying to find a way to share something incredibly humiliating with her mum but doesn’t know how to. It shows that they all have issues that they need to come to terms with, but also find a way of forgiving each other.
This book actually made me cry, it is so emotional and heart wrenching in places, the characters are beautifully written, and you can feel the emotion on each page which is something I really love about this book.
An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena
I have always raved about Shari Lapena’s books, I adore her as a author, and I did enjoy this book, but not nearly as much as her previous ones. The book is set during a freezing storm that leaves guests in an isolated hotel, that has lost power and access to help. The guests that are staying there all have their own deep secrets waiting to come out, and as they begin to die in mysterious circumstances, one by one people are beginning to suspect and point the finger at each other. The book is so well written, and the character development itself is incredible, I really enjoyed learning more about the characters.
I really did enjoy the book, however, I did guess who the murderer was which was why I think it kind of put a downer on the entire book, however if you love a whodunnit mystery, then this book will honestly be right up your street!
The Cipher by Isabella Maldonado
This book gripped me from the beginning as it follow FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera, and during her teenage years escaped a serial killers trap, however, fast forward to the present day, she is jumped in Virginia Park and the attack goes viral. The man who abducted her 11 years ago is watching and recognises Nina, and uses the internet to play games with her and commit murder. The Cipher uses riddles and codes on social media to draw Nina into the investigation, which he does successfully, but will Nina catch him after all these years?
I loved this book because it has your perfect heroine, fighting for justice and teamworking to bring down someone who has caused so much hurt. The character development in this book is amazing, and I really hope there will be more books to follow Nina & the team!
Every Last Secret by A.R.Torre
Toxic battles of jealousy, the pursuit of perfection and the opportunity to try and outdo one another. The book is all about Cat and Neena, who live very different lives. Cat live the perfect life, successful husband, life of leisure, gossiping with friend and chairing charity events, yet deep down Cat hides a secret that has the power to break her. Neena is completely different, she wants the live that Cat has and goes after William (Cat’s husband) by accepting a high powered job with his company and buying the house next door to them.
The insecurities are clear on every page, but the way the characters develop, and the more you find out about them, the more you realise that some people will go to any lengths to get what they want. This was such an amazing read, and even though you could see the direction the book was going in, it was still such an incredible read.
That is what I’ve been reading lately. I’ve still got a lot of reading left to do, but I’m hoping to reach 60 books this year.
Let me know what you’ve been reading in the comments!

I felt the exact same about An Unwanted Guest! I’ve loved every other Shari Lapena book I’ve read but it just felt a bit meh to me. I enjoyed it but nowhere near as much as other people seemed to haha.
Glad to hear that you liked The Cipher. I’m looking forward to reading that one soon. 🙂

I think it can be annoying when you easily guess the plot of a book, and I’m sorry it meant the whole book was a bit of a downer 🙂 thanks for sharing these reading choices x
I can never enjoy Shari Lapena books and it makes me sad because so many people rave about them!
Great post! I’ll definitely be checking out a few of these 😄
I haven’t heard of these books before. But all sounds like an interesting read. Thank you for your recommendations.
This is such a great group of books! I just got Every Last Secret and I can’t wait to read it. Cipher also sounds very interesting and I’ve added it to my TBR 🙂
Loved these reviews! I haven’t read any of these books, I’ll have to check them out.
I need to add some more titles to my TBR list and these sound great. Thanks for sharing!
I haven’t read any of these titles and since I don’t read a lot of contemporary fiction, I’ll need to add a several to my list. I just finished ‘Ninth House’ by Leigh Bardugo and liked it. (fantasy) Thanks.
My reading has dropped so much lately which I’m NOT enjoying, partly due to time, partly due to being in a slump. So getting some new recommendations is always such a bonus and these all sound really good – different from each other but all good. Thanks for the suggestions!
I haven’t read much this year either but the Cypher sounds like a book I would love. I’m obsessed with crime and thriller books x
I’ve really neglected my reading list recently but my brain needs some more me time and some more reading. I’m adding some of these to my list!
Rosie
I really like your reviews! I’m currently reading more books as it’s lockdown and I usually tend to go for historical books (I’m a history graduate lol!). Great post as always! xo
