How A Simple How Are You Can Change Someone’s Day

I’ve been really honest lately and said that I have basically been struggling so much, and I think at some points we all go through these moments. Sometimes trying to keep your head in the game, stay focused and be a decent functioning human being can be so bloody tough, but one thing I have noticed is that the simple art of being asked if I’m okay genuinely makes the world of difference.

I am so lucky that I genuinely have the best friends in the world, they keep me sane, they keep me strong and they make me realise that everything will be okay, even if it isn’t right now.

I’m definitely the kind of person that puts on a strong front, I don’t always like to show other’s when I’m struggling, or if I need something because you don’t want to be that person who brings someone else down because you are going through a difficult time. I would rather struggle silently that be a burden on someone else, but I reality it doesn’t work like that.

Asking if someone is okay can literally change everything in just a few short words. It can make them feel like they are less alone, it gives someone a chance to talk about how they are feeling and get things off their chest rather than bottling it all up inside.

If you’re like me, you will bottle it up inside, overthink it to the point of emotional exhaustion and feel like the world is basically falling in on you. It is definitely a struggle I’m not going to lie. But the thing that made me realise that when someone asks if I’m okay, it is because they genuinely care, not for any other reason and that saying I’m not okay isn’t a sign of weakness, I’m literally acknowledging that something is wrong and I’m not sure where to go from here.

Some of you may know my friend Nadia from Miel & Mint, and she is probably one of the nicest human beings on the planet. She asked me if I was okay, and that day I literally felt like the world was going to swallow me whole. She spoke to me, calmed me, made me realise that everything was going to be okay and bought me back down to earth. She made me realise so much, including the fact that I was stronger than I ever thought possible.

Things that you need to remember:

  • If someone asks you if you’re okay, it is okay to be honest.
  • It is okay to say that you’re struggling and things are getting on top of you
  • It isn’t a sign of weakness to ask for help from someone, it is a form of strength
  • You’re never alone, no matter how bad things are or things might get for you
  • There will be light at the end of the tunnel, even if you can’t see it right now
  • The right people around you will be there for you through it all, even if you’re like me and do this really awful ugly cry where your eyes just end up looking light bright red orbs.

If you’re someone who have a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while, this is your reminder to reach out to them. You never know what is genuinely going on in someone’s life until you actually ask them. The amount of good friends that you have can normally be counted on one hand, don’t forget them.

I love the concept of this and how easy it is to change someone’s day x

So true! I think I do need to make a bit more of an effort with my friends sometimes although occasionally I do feel like I’m the one making all the effort but I’d like to us to stay in touch and to be there for each other x

I’m terrible for not reaching out to people because I always feel like they’ll think I’m being a nuisance or annoyance. It’s silly I know. I generally hate being asked how I am because I feel like I like the easiest to reply is, I’m good, when in fact that is never ever the case. So if I genuinely answer how I am, then I feel like I’m whining or complaining. :/ It’s hard to re-program my brain not to think these things.

1000% I agree with you Amie! It’s funny you wrote this post because at work I’ve been having issues with a few colleagues and the way they work and it dragged me down, more so on my last shift. One of those colleagues asked on my last shift if I was okay. Whilst I haven’t spoken to them about the issues yet it was nice to know they’re looking out for me and it’s encouraged me even more to open up to them – without being a dick of course.

One conversation with someone can change things for them at that very moment. Having said that it’s also important not to take people and their friendliness. for granted.

Its so true, sometimes a simple how are you can literally change your day and world in that instance! Having rubbish mental health can be so isolating so having someone break through that barrier and loneliness to ask how you are is so lovely.

It’s so important to remember that you’re not alone. Often in times of darkness, you get so caught in your little bubble that you forget that asking someone for help could ease the weight off your shoulders.

  • Kim says:

This is such a great post. I struggle reaching out to people but am more likely to open up if they ask how I am. Of course some do still get the default “I’m fine”, especially at work, but I’m trying to be more honest.

Wow this post is so powerful. It’s incredible how something so simple can be forgotten sometimes in the busy world we live in. I hope you’re feeling a bit better now lovely. x
