I have loved reading books since I was a kid, at birthday’s and Christmas I was always the one that asked for about 10 different books, various different genres, and I was always the kid that could be found with my head in a book too. However over the last few months I’ve been struggling to find the time to read a book, to get stuck into a book and just switch off. Lately though, I have found ways for me to make more time to read. Ready to see my tips?
Take A Book Everywhere I Go
I have been taking a book everywhere I go and I mean everywhere. I leave one in our car so when we are travelling (Paul is driving) I can read a book if I want and I have even been taking one to work. I genuinely love being able to read at work during my lunch break, I find it so calming and soothing, it’s really helped my anxiety to!
Plan Time In Your Day To Read
Part of my wind down routine before bed is to get involved in reading my book, just for 30 minutes and it works wonders. Like I have said I also read in my lunch break and sometimes I wake up a little earlier in the morning so I can read a book while the sun rises. It makes such a difference to my day.
Download The Kindle App
I actually have a really old Kindle Fire, and I haven’t been able to charge it. I used to love it so much and I also loved the fact that there were literally so many amazing free books on there! My personal favourite was 39 weeks, and was one of the books that I couldn’t put down!
Don’t Limit Yourself To One Book
I’ve got couple of books on the go at the moment, mainly because even though I love to have one book on the go, if I fancy mixing it up, I can switch to another. It definitely isn’t for everyone, but it does help me, especially having multiple books on the go, it just means that I can have multiple books placed everywhere and not worry about not being able to read.
Don’t Be Afraid Of Putting Down A Book That Isn’t Right For You
I’ve read a fair few this year that genuinely looked like my cup of tea but as I got further in, I just couldn’t get into it, I didn’t feel the overwhelming urge to read it or to get involved in the characters. At that point, I know it is time to put the book down, stop wasting my time with a book that I’m not enjoying.
Join Goodreads
I have loved having a Goodreads account, it gives me so much motivation to keep reading and to find so many amazing new books! If you follow Alice Spake on Instagram or Twitter then she has some of the most amazing book recommendations. Not only that the amount of amazing books she has read gives me so much motivation to keep reading all the books in my collection.
Give Yourself A Challenge
On Goodreads you can set yourself a goal for the amount of books you can read this year. In January I set the amount of books I would like to read at 10, I’m 7 books in (I haven’t updated my Goodreads account yet) and I’m hoping to exceed that challenge. A challenge really gives you the kick up the backside that you need sometimes.
Try Audiobooks
If you don’t fancy carrying a book around with you and you would prefer to listen to a book, then audiobooks are definitely the way to go. Laying in bed listening to a good book can be so soothing or on the way home when you’re walking back and you’re wanting to drown out the world while you walk. I’ve listened to 2 audiobooks, I do enjoy it, but there is something so lovely about holding a physical book in your hand.

Since joining goodreads this year, I’ve read 33 books, I also have a kindle i got for my birthday and listen to some via Audible, I’ve just listened to Mythos, written and read by Stephen Fry, I find listening to him so relaxing.

I’ve been loving Goodreads too since joining it especially because you can set a goal, and watch how many pages you’ve read etc! I also tend to read more than one book at a time too x

I enjoyed your post.I love reading and wish I had more time to do it! I too have many books on the go at the same time and can’t go anywhere without a book accompanying me! I don’t want to waste those few moments doing nothing when I could read instead. I haven’t heard of Goodreads. It sounds interesting so going to look into that today. Thanks 🙂
Love these ideas. I’m an avid book reader and am always looking for ways to get more reading done.
I absolutely LOVE reading and it seems like I don’t have enough time between two kids, working, blogging, and keeping my house (kind of) tidy! Thanks for the tips. I use Goodreads and have the Kindle App, so I’ll try all your other ideas!
Love this post!! I try to give myself an hour before I plan to go to sleep to wind down with a good book x
I find it easy to read books on holiday, but outside of that, I find it really hard! Definitely some good tips, I do agree with the stopping a book if you don’t like it. I had the do that with Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I wanted to keep reading as it’s a classic, but I just did not like it. So I had to stop.

It was a goal of mine at the start of the year to make an effort to read more, I started strong but I’ve been slipping a bit recently. Taking a book everywhere is such a good idea. I tried audiobooks but I never really got into them. I think knowing when to give up on one and move on really helps too x

Love this list! As a fellow bookworm, it can be hard to find the time (and the quiet!) to read. I want to read as much as I can, but life can really get in the way. Your tips were excellent and the Goodreads reading challenge has really helped me get my butt in gear to read more. I’ve already met my challenge for this year!
Thanks for another amazing post, Amie!
I never really got into reading but want to start xx
I was going to read more this year. Well, actually I probably should say, start reading again as I really haven’t done any in the last few years. I even bought a new book, two now I think of it and I have not started either of them!

Great advice! I have started reading FAR more since I got the Scrib’d app on my phone. Sure, it comes with a monthly fee ($8) but that gives you full access to their library and I can always find a ton of books there I want to read 🙂 You can save books, download them for offline reading, bookmark various books, etc
I definitely need to learn to put books down I’m not enjoying!
I always get comments on my book review posts asking how I read so much and I say that I take a book with me (everywhere) and I read instead of watching TV x
One thing I need to do is find more time to read, I’ve kind of neglected my favourite past time! These are some great ways to get back to reading again! xx

I’ve started reading on my lunch break too, and I love being able to switch off from work for an hour and get stuck into a book!

I had every intention of reading more this year. I got a bunch of new books and I’ve not read even a little bit!
Really need to make a bigger effort.

I love reading and this year I made it my mission to read more books. These are really good tips!

This is definitely something that I need to get better at! I absolutely love reading and do not do it enough!

Loved this post! People think I’m silly for putting ‘read book’ on my to do list, but it helps me actually set aside time in the day to do it haha! I think reading before bed is a great way of making sure you get some reading in that day, plus it winds you down before you go to sleep usually x
