6 Assumptions I’m Sick Of Hearing About As A Blogger

I swear as a blogger, as soon as you say oh you’re a blogger there are lots of assumptions that are made about you. I’ve had that lately with someone that I am friends with. I’ve said so many times that blogging is one of the greatest things I’ve ever started, for various different reasons, but it has been a journey and a half for me. I’ve learned so much, but also I’ve realised that it makes you realise what true friends you have around you – mainly because people make some seriously ridiculous assumptions about what being a blogger means.

So what assumptions am I sick of hearing?

Every item we feature is automatically gifted

The new guidelines in my opinion from the ASA are great to an extent, I love the fact that it is reminding people the importance of declaring gifted items. I do it all of the time, you will see * next to a title to show gifted items and on Instagram there will be gifted at the beginning of the caption. The problem is though, people are reporting people for items that haven’t been gifted, automatically assuming that it has been and it’s awful. Not everything has been gifted, we do buy products to support the brands that we love and if it has been gifted we will tell you.

We get paid lots of money to talk about products

Some influencers get paid a lot of money to talk about products and I am like, get that coin people, I’m proud of them. But not all of us do, so don’t automatically assume that we all get paid lots of money to blog. We do this because we enjoy it, we enjoy talking to people with similar interests, share things we love and just have an outlet just for us. Blogging is a joy. That is it.

That content creation is easy

Creating content can be so hard, especially when it comes to Instagram. Instagram is pretty much like a yo-yo. You can have all the content creation ideas in the world and then you post to Instagram and basically 2% of your following sees the post. Oh hello feeling like you’re doing all this hard work for no reason. I mean it’s pretty much soul destroying on another level.

Gifted items pay the bills

It’s pretty straight forward that gifted items don’t pay the bills. I don’t sell my samples on, I normally share with my family, my friends or if I haven’t opened them I give them to charity. People seem to think that gifted items can go towards our bills, someone close to me actually suggested that to me before and I’m like seriously? I’m pretty sure that O2 won’t accept a highlighter as part of my phone bill.

Being a blogger is easy

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, blogging is really hard, we manage multiple social media accounts, write blog posts, try to have a regular life, get a few hours sleep and just be a normal functioning human being. It can be hard. Yes we choose to do it, but that is because we genuinely enjoy it and we love having an outlet. That is what is important to us.

That we are all trying to be the next Zoella

I mean fair enough we would all love to create our own products the way that Zoella does (maybe not the advent calendar – sorry Zoe) and earn money from that. That would be a dream if I could create my own vegan range of beauty products – maybe one day, but the reason I wanted to start my blog was to have an outlet. My blog is important to me because I can share what I’m thinking and feeling without being judged. I’ll be forever grateful for what the bigger bloggers have done for us and paved the way for us small timers to work with amazing brands and create such fantastic content but not all of us want the same thing from blogging. Sometimes we just want an outlet.

Wow, yes Amie! I’ve certainly sick of hearing all of these too. The “in it for the freebies” phrase really grinds my gears too!

  • Melissa says:

Yes! This is so true. For me the content creation is the most time consuming. Even though I love writing, there is so much else that is involved. Great post!

  • Boxnip says:

I think you’ve pretty much covered all the assumptions I can think of. Blogging is an outlet for me too and I think I’d go nuts if I didn’t have it. 🙂

  • Lucy says:

Yup, was nodding along to each and every one of these! It’s really frustrating when people assume you have only written a piece because an item has been gifted to you or you have received financial compensation for it – rarely the case! x

  • Sarah Winton says:

This is so true. I blog because I love to write and the community is amazing. Not because I get free stuff (which I don’t)!

  • Lanae Bond says:

Blogging is not easy and nor is a gift fest! This is what some people who do not blog believe and most would not last a month blogging!

  • Sarah says:

I blog as a hobby in my spare time so don’t really get many comments like this but I think a lot of people presume if you have one you get everything free xx

  • Jazmin says:

Yesss love this post! Gifted items definitely do not pay the bills lol. & as you say, we do this cos we enjoy it!! At least that’s why I do xx

  • Sarah says:

Love this post!! With the AD rules, I’m hearing more and more bloggers and vloggers having to say “this is not an ad” which I think is actually really sad that it’s come to this. Blogging is definitely NOT easy and I definitely wish people outside the blogging community understood that, or better yet, stop giving their opinion (bit harsh sorry hhaah)

    Sarah x

  • Sahara says:

I can definitely see that there is at times a mistrust between audiences + influencers when a product is being promoted (either bought on their own / gifted) and I think it’s mainly because there may be a select few influencers that promote things they don’t genuinely use – which then gives a bad name to all bloggers out here.

Content Creation is 100% not easy and I have definitely heard a few people say that it seems like it is – wish they’d try it themselves!

  • Aimsy says:

I couldn’t agree more with this post! I hate the ‘negative’ view blogging can get from people who don’t really understand all the hard work that gets put into running a blog and all that entails. A lot of people blog for fun and rarely earn any money from it to support paying bills; although I guess you could always take this as a compliment? Like they think your work is so good, why wouldn’t you be getting paid for it? Blogging is hard work…most would give up if they realised free stuff doesn’t happen immediately!
    Thanks for sharing,

  • Lindsey says:

Yes, yes and YES!! I love this! The one about not knowing how much work goes into it is a big one, I constantly feel like I’m having to justify that yes, I would like to spend an entire day frantically trying to catch up on blogging stuff and no, that doesn’t mean I’m then up straight. Also with the whole gifting/earning thing… I get annoyed with hearing that everything you do on the blog should be about money. I’ve never earned a penny on it, and that is how I want it (for the time, anyway, who knows what the future holds!). This is such a great post.

  • Erin says:

YES I LOVE THIS! I don’t wanna be Zoe, I don’t make any money and I buy most of my makeup! I’m happy with all of that! 🙂

  • Ashley Firth says:

I love this post! It speaks to me and so many others undoubtedly too! I’m sick of hearing things like – ‘blogging is easy’ and ‘You get so many free things’. One of my friends keeps asking me to ‘get her some free shoes’ ?!?!?! People don’t realise sometimes how much hard work goes into blogging.xxx

  • Hels says:

Ahh this is so true! I get so fed up of hearing “oh wow, you must get loads of freebies” and while I’m lucky enough to occasionally be sent books to review, they aren’t free considering how much time goes into reading, photographing and reviewing them! I have no interest in becoming the next Zoella (lol about the advent calendar!) though I admire anyone that is able to make a living out of blogging!
    Wonderful post as always,
    Hels xx

    • Ohh, there is also one assumption, and in my opinion it is the very worst, but it (only in my opinion) ,says a lot about people who say it. It’s that bloggers do it because they are lazy/not qualified to find regular job.
I know it because I’ve heard it so many times when people would talk about bloggers and influencers in general. Like “oh, these days young people don’t want to work, they all want to be bloggers and youtubers”.
I’m sorry, I have a regular job, and I post on my blog constantly, so don’t tell me I am lazy! Would I leave my day job if I could live comfortably from my blogging? Absolutely yes!!

  • Tiffany says:

I just seen your url and was like I need to visit this site, and it’s such a cute site. I get the same thing that a lot of people seem to thing that blogging is easy and so is running a site, and that it’s something that people throw money at and that is so not the truth. Blogging for me is just like something I can throw my feelings into and have an outlet even if no one sees it, it’s fine because it’s not about that. I loved this blog, thank you for sharing it! ❤

  • heather says:

Yes to this! Most people in my Iife tend to think that being a blogger is easy and I get everything for free which isn’t true x

  • Lady Writes says:

I get so fed up of hearing people say it must have been easy and I’m so lucky….like, this is the hardest I’ve ever worked in my life! x

  • tonyalee says:

Ah yes, all the “free things” I get pays the bills! I also dislike the pressure of feeling the need to disclose when it’s something you’ve purchased! That’s annoying.

  • Kayla says:

I can’t agree more with this post Amie, everything you’ve mentioned has been assumed by close people I’ve told about my blog and none of them are true!

    Kayla | http://www.kaylajayne.co.uk

  • Chloe says:

‘Being a Blogger is easy’ I hate that one! Do you want to proof read, take my pictures and creat all new content?? it’s not easy!

  • Kyra says:

These are so so true! I cannot agree more!

  • Daisy says:

All of these!! Every. single. one! How does anyone think being a blogger is easy?! I think they see all the top bloggers with their gifted posts and think that everything will fall in their lap! xD Nope!

    Amazing post, wifey! x

  • Pat says:

Im new to the blogging world so no freebies for me at the moment😂
What i have found in my case is that people do not take blogging seriously and they think it is very easy. Need i say it has been hard to start and im still trying to find my feet. Brilliant post this. Enjoyed reading it.

  • C.K Beauty says:

Those assumptions are spot on! Currently I earn nothing from blogging nor do I get any freebies so am just doing it because it makes me happy! What I get from people I speak to is them asking why I do it if I don’t earn any money. Some see it as a “waste of time” but it allows me to photograph and write about what I love! X

  • Nancy says:

I can totally relate to you about these assumptions!! Gifted items definitely do not pay the bills. As great as free things are, they aren’t necessarily necessities. I came to a point where I would only spend time on monetary payments rather than item gifts. Thanks for setting things straight!

  • Soph says:

Haha oh my goodness I relate to every single one of these assumptions. Honestly I’m definitely okay with never being the next Zoella, the next In The Frow though? I wouldn’t mind that haha. I hate that there are so many ‘she’s only featuring it because it’s been gifted’ too, I feature an equal amount of things that I’ve paid for fully thank you. Such a great post!

  • Michelle Blackadar says:

before i even read a word of the actual post, i saw the title and said “oh yes girl tell em’!” i knew i was in for a post that i would absolutely love! it really is very frustrating having all these assumptions made about us as bloggers. every product i’ve mentioned besides one post as been simply because i love it and i want to share it with my followers because i want my followers to feel beautiful & i believe the products i’ve mentioned will help that. we’d all be lying if we said we didn’t hope to make some money from blogging but that’s only a small part of it. if all we cared about was the money, we would have stopped after one month because a lot of months we don’t get a equal monetary return on the amount of hours we put into our blog. i could literally go on for hours, this was incredible xx

  • Pretty much all theiLiterally all of these are so true!

  • Great post busting those myths

YESSS this is so true, part of the reasons i dont really tell my friends about my blog. I just do it out of hobby and i really love connecting with everyone as a blogger! Thanks for sharing x

  • Hayley says:

As soon as I started collaborating I knew that I wouldn’t be too keen on accepting freebies – as you say it doesn’t pay the bills!
I don’t really speak about my blog that much around people that I would have to explain how it works to (if that makes sense) – I just always feel like something negative is most likely to come from someone else that hasn’t seen the whole journey. Ultimately though I think anyone who is going to be negative is either jealous/frustrated that they aren’t following their passion.

  • Alice says:

It honestly just makes me laugh now how people think it’s so easy! I’ve had quite a few friends see me get ‘free stuff’ and then try and set up their own blogs only to fold within a month because of the workload!
    Alice Xx

  • Johnny says:

Amen Amie! I can’t stand it when people form an opinion about something they don’t know about nor experienced. It breeds ignorance. They don’t realise that owning and managing a blog is like running your own business: you gotta keep a good image consistently and work hard on producing the content you produce and promoting it constantly. We really gotta educate these folks!

    Johnny | Johnny’s Traventures

  • Laila says:

Haha yes! The one about being the next Zoella is one I get asked about a lot. The answer is always ‘of course not’. People are so quick to judge and make assumptions. Sometimes it’s best to just go along with it to be honest.

  • I am so happy that you have spoken out about this subject beautiful, it really annoys me when non-bloggers think that blogging is easy or a lazy job. 💜

    With love, Alisha Valerie x | http://www.alishavalerie.com

  • Mel says:

Omg YES to this! I wish we did get paid as much as everyone thinks, be loaded!

    http://littlemissmelanie.com

  • Emma Rankin says:

    Creating content is so hard

  • shelley says:

when I was at uni the people in my halls would get so annoyed at me receiving gifted items but didn’t care how much work I put into it. blogging is so much harder than people think

  • Claire says:

I’ll be honest, as a book blogger who’s mostly a hobbyist, I haven’t actually heard any of these comments – I was really surprised to read them! I can’t believe anyone could think those things, I can see why they wind you up.

At least now you can direct them straight here to avoid answering the same question every time!

  • Jaya Avendel says:

Ooh, unless you are a blogger, no one else understands one cannot simply sit down and write a blog post or story, or article. Being a blogger is not easy, nor does it pay the bills right off. It takes months of dedication and learning and growth.

On the flip side, there are also people who think there is no money in writing either!

I love it when people are conversationally curious without making assumptions!

  • Zara says:

The assumption that being a blogger is easy is the most frustrating thing! I also think that because unfortunately some people did just start blogging to try and get free items etc that everyone is being tarnished with the same brush when it just isn’t true – I just love writing haha! x
