Self Love & Why I Really Struggle This Time Of Year

Self love, sounds like a really easy situation doesn’t it? Loving yourself, appreciating yourself and being kind to yourself. It’s literally getting to that time of year again, the time of year where all I see on TV is about diets, losing weight for Christmas and New year and I’m like I literally have 0 time for that. The thing that I can’t stand the most is the fact that there is a serious amount of pressure to lose weight and look a certain way for one day of the year, and do you know what? It’s unnecessary pressure.

So what is self love to me? It’s about being comfortable in your own skin, taking care of yourself and prioritising your own happiness – including making sure that you have a good self care routine.

I am probably my own toughest critic and not only that sometimes I feel like I sabotage my own relationship with myself. What I mean by that is you’re supposed to treat yourself like you would your best friend, and I’m definitely the kind of person that doesn’t, if I had an enemy I’m pretty sure that I would treat them better than I do myself.

Some days I feel like I’ve come such a long way with how I feel about myself and I’m a damn queen and seeing the adverts on the TV about diets that are supposed to make you lose 3 dress sizes in about 2 months which is ridiculously unhealthy. And then I go and have days where putting my hair in a messy bun and want to pretty much hide from the world.

I struggle with self love and self doubt in who I am as a person, am I good enough? Is my worth determined by the way I look? By my size? Whether I’m a size 8 or size 28, I am worthy and I am constantly wondering what others think of me.

So why have I had a massive rant?

Well there is a good reason.

It’s that time of year where people are basically shoving down your throat that you need to lose weight, you need to look a certain way, and guess what you don’t!

You’re absolutely amazing in every way, you’re beautiful inside and out. You don’t need to do any drastic diet to lose weight, you don’t need to do anything that you don’t want to. You don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to.

Society shouldn’t decide what you should do and who you should be. When people are advertising how you should change it hurts, it’s rough and I literally feel like I’m dragging my messy bun through it all, all day, every damn day.

Don’t let the season get to you, enjoy your life, live your life, do what makes you happy.

You don’t always have to love yourself everyday, like I said some days I genuinely struggle, but the days when I do feel like a queen makes the struggle worth it, and I appreciate those days.

  • This can be a really tough time of year because there tends to be all the messages about “indulging over Christmas” and losing the “Christmas weight” and it’s just unnecessary!

I absolutely hate some of the adverts that we see at this time of year! I really don’t think adverts for dieting should be allowed, it’s so dangerous, especially for young girls. I love Christmas and I definitely indulge in good food and drink over the festive period, but I don’t want to be bombarded with all of these messages about losing weight afterwards! Just let us enjoy ourselves! It’s just not needed xx

I totally agree, this time of year can be really hard – I definitely love indulging over Christmas but the guilt I end up feeling afterwards can be really tough, constantly being bombarded with NY gym memberships and resolutions, and you’re absolutely right – every body is beautiful.
