A Letter To The Lost Friendships

The other day, I found some of my old photo albums & memories on Facebook, not just from when I was a teen but from when I was in primary school, and I got emotional just looking at those photos. You remember all those moments with the people you loved back then, the people who made you smile, the people who picked you up when you needed it the most and not only that they are some of the people who you have some of the best memories with.

I guess it is natural for some friendships to just fall by the side, it is natural for people to drift apart, but I’m kinda like, is it always this painful to look back on?

It probably shouldn’t be this painful, but when you have so many amazing memories with those people you wonder what has happened? How could a friendship that you thought would last forever really didn’t. Maybe that is the naivety in me, but some friendships can last the test of time – or at least I would like to think so.

I have kind of had one of those weeks where I’ve taken a walk down memory lane, reflected on a lot and had a few thoughts about what is going on in my life.

If you’re reading this and you knew me from years ago, this is one for you.

I know it’s probably been years since we saw each other last, it has been forever since we spoke or we might see each other in shops and try to pretend that we don’t see each other when in reality we are at that point where we have no idea what to say to each other anymore.

Just because we drifted apart doesn’t mean that I would never be there for you ever again. I’ve never been that kind of friend and I never will be. I like to think I’m the kind of friend that if someone ever needed someone or something they would know that the door would be open.

Even if we never speak again, or if we never have a friendship like we used to, I really appreciate the friendship we had. Those friendships changed who I was, the moulded me into the person that I am right now, and helped me to become this person I am now and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Just because we drifted doesn’t mean I ever forgot you, or the friendship.

Like what you’ve read? How about we become social media friends?

This post really speaks to me! I lost lots of friends over the years and it’s weird now we’re all older and some are getting married etc! The door isn’t always closed

If you look back, honestly there have been so many people who you care about yet have just fallen by the wayside. It’s sad but it’s also important to realise that you will always be there for those people! xxxx

  • Lovely post Amie, I can resonate a lot with this. I lost more or less all of my friends when my anxiety got really bad; for a bunch of reasons and I find myself reminiscing on the old times, wondering where they went and why it all happened. It’s sad but I try not dwell on it too much xxx

I totally know what you mean, when times get tough you realise who your true friends are. If you ever need to talk or anything please let me know darling! xxxxx

It’s really crazy how you can be so close to someone and then one day, they’re a stranger all over again. Just remember, it’s all a blessing or a lesson!

I know what you mean, it’s one of those facts of life I think, you’ll drift apart from those people that you loved the most at one point! xxxx

  • I always find it strange how fragile friendships are.. how easily they can break down and suddenly we havent spoken to someone in so long. This was such a great post which is so relatable to everyone in all ages of life

Aw, this is really beautiful. Personally (I’m a junior in high school), all of the friendships that have fallen to the wayside have happened very naturally. No sudden ending, just a quiet finish, usually brought on by changing schools or having schedules that don’t put us in any of the same classes. So in that sense I feel like I have been lucky. But this post also hits hard because I’ll be graduating so soon, and that will be a very rough and sudden ending to many friendships, especially since I am most likely taking a travel gap year. I will definitely need to try and visit as many of my friends as possible, but also keep in mind that it’s a natural process for some friendships to end and for new ones to blossom 🙂

I was thinking about this just the other day! Friendships come and go as we grow older, but what I’ve come to realise it that it’s not so much about why the friendship ended, it’s more about what you’ve gained from the friendship. I’ve learned so much about myself from friendships and I honestly would not have been the person I was without them, even if they did eventually come to an end! Really enjoyed reading this post lovely, thank you for sharing! 🙂

Thank you so much my lovely, I really appreciate it! I know what you mean though, those friendships teach you so much about yourself, even if those friendships came to an end, you appreciate the journey! xxx

This is so true! It’s amazing how you can think a friendship will last forever but life changes so quickly and growing up take its toll so much on friendships – but you never ever forget them xo

Beautiful words Amie. If I’m honest, I hate when old memories like this pop up because I always wonder what happened, why did everything fall to pieces? Sometimes you just stop talking, and it’s odd. Sad but odd xxx

As you said, some friendships do drift apart. One great quote I love is “some friends are in your life for a reason, some only for a season”. You shouldn’t ever be upset, but appreciate that the person probably can’t find a place for you in their life at this moment. They might come back, but I do understand that it can suck sometimes.

I didn’t really lose friends, its just that we have moved on with our lives and moved to places as well. Just physical distance. And I always feel nostalgic going over with the photos. Sweet memories.
