Things I Do On A Bad Mental Health Day

On I have documented quite a lot all about mental health and where I am at currently with my mental health, but I think it is important for people to be able to have a list of things that they could do on days when they are having a bad mental health day.

So what do I mean when I say a bad mental health day? I know when it comes to my mental health, I end up overthinking the things, I become very distant, tired, withdrawn, I feel like I’m not good enough for anyone, I wouldn’t have slept very well and my anxiety will kick in.

On those bad days however, I have some wonderful people around me who are my reason for battling through those bad days and working towards those days where I want to be able to smile more than my cheeks understand possible.

During those bad days however, here are some of the things that I work hard to do, in the hope that it will help me to know how to deal with bad days in the future but hopefully cut down on the bad days that I have in the future.

So what do I do?

1. Pamper Yourself

This might sound like something you don’t usually do, however, putting a face mask on, or painting your nails, have a nice hot shower with your favourite shower gel, or you have a hot bath with some lush products. That is something that helps me to relax, take some time out and not have an opportunity to overthink things!

2. Find A Creative Outlet

When you’re having a bad day, getting these feelings out can really help. When I first got diagnosed with depression I started using a creative outlet, things like writing, drawing, sewing, anything that I could do to express my feelings from the inside.

3. Workout

Words cannot describe how much working out helped me on my journey. When I was having bad days I do try my best to workout, it’s like my time out to focus on something, to achieve something wonderful and once I have finished I feel incredible!

4. Listen To Your Favourite Song & Sing

I love music, I love listening to my music, I have my own extra special playlist ready for when I have bad days, it has all my favourite songs on it that I can dance and sing along to. It has to be fast and upbeat songs, because if it is anything too slow then I start to overthink again and no one wants that!

5. Watch A Cute/Funny YouTube Video

When I am down I usually watch something that will make me smile, usually it comes in the form of cute cats, but it is definitely something that makes me smile and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

6. Get lots of cuddles

Cuddles are my favourite things in the world, I love giving hugs and receiving them, and Paul gives me some of the best ones ever, but never forget the power of an amazing cuddle from someone you love!

7. Chocolate

Chocolate is something that I turn to, even if it is just a little bit, I usually have a few squares of chocolate and it is one of those things that instantly makes me feel so much better!

8. Read A Good Book

You can’t beat a good book, it is absolutely wonderful when you get immersed into the characters of a good book but also you can focus on something that isn’t reality for a while and just relax. That is one of the most wonderful things about a good book, or even go back and reread an old classic!

9. Watch Your Favourite Movie

My favourite movie has to be Disney Beauty and the Beast, I watched it over and over again, I still know every word to the movie, so on a bad day, dig out one of your faves, put it in the DVD player, curl up in your duvets, have a cuppa and watch your movie!

10. Plan Something

When I am having a horrid mental health day, I try my best to plan something, even if it is just dinner, that way it gives me something to look forward to and something to focus on. It gives me that outlet where I can forget all of the negativity and focus on the positives!

What is something that helps you during bad mental health days?

  1. 13/01/2016 / 6:39 am

    Thanks for sharing these ideas.

I also enjoy singing along to songs on the bad days but I go for the sad ones as week, pretty much all of my music collection is mainly in a minor key!

I also enjoy (although not as often as before) playing guitar as the creative and technical challenge absorbs me and takes me away from over thinking.

Playing guitar is absolutely amazing darling! My husband does that and he adores it! People keep going and remember that no matter how bad your day is, you can get through it!?

  2. 13/01/2016 / 8:32 am

My favourite of them all would be the cuddles. I love cuddles. Cuddles make everything better. I don’t care who they’re from, my mom a friend, my bf, … cuddles just make problems disappear even if it’s only for a little while.

Exactly and when you’re wrapped up in the arms of someone you love and someone who loves you hack, that is the most important thing! Everything will be okay!?

Thank you so much beautiful! It honestly means the world! I think sometimes it helps others to understand how you are feeling and how they can help you and vice versa. If they’re having a bad day you can know what to do too!?

  3. 13/01/2016 / 12:07 pm

Thank you, this post was really helpful! I always find that working out or keeping myself busy always seems to be the best for me! I am going to try some of the other things that you listed, I think I need to learn to relax more on those days xx

I completely agree with the things that help me when I’m having a bad mental health day, but please do let me know how you get on with the new ones!?

  4. 13/01/2016 / 12:34 pm

These are all exactly what I do when I’m having an anxiety day or just a day where my brain doesn’t want to function! I also tidy like mad when I need to calm myself down 🙂 Tania xx

I completely forgot about tidying, I do that a lot when I am struggling with my mental health! I’m so glad you’ve found things that help you with your anxiety, it’s so important!?

  5. 13/01/2016 / 2:15 pm

Yes yes yes! Totally love that you’ve written about mental health, what it means to have a bad mental health day, and how to overcome it. Maintaining good mental health is all about keeping an eye on the little things and how they affect your mood xx

I completely agree Zoe! I think sometimes it is incredibly important to just keep an eye on what triggers your mental health to improve or deteriorate because then you know how to move forward, or avoid it!?

  6. 13/01/2016 / 2:55 pm

You have put together so lovely ideas! My anxiety usually kicks in at night. I usually turn to my mom then. I think she can feel it and she then just talks to me, never speaking about it and that helps me a lot! It´s just something else to think of which is great. I often also turn to Youtube videos that make me smile all the time! I think pampering and a hot shower would do wonders as well!

I completely agree, having your mum close to you is so important and obviously your mum understand what you’re going through when it does kick in! A pamper session is always needed!?

  7. 13/01/2016 / 9:43 pm

Disney films always make me feel better! And a good writing session works wonders for my state of mind! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much darling! I think Disney movies are literally everything when you’re having a bad day, they take your mind away to a place where it is a lot calmer!?

Thank you so much Amela! I have literally just got colouring books, my best friend bought me one for Christmas and it is so calming it’s brilliant! Please do let me know how you get on with these darling! ?

  9. 14/01/2016 / 11:16 am

Great list Aime! These things could really help someone who’s having a bad day with their mental health! I think I do all of these apart from working out! However, it could be worth a try.

Really loving your blog at the moment!

I’d definitely recommend it, even if it is just a long walk, it honestly makes you feel so much better! Awh thank you so much Jordan, I literally just had a little tear of joy because you said that! ?

  10. 14/01/2016 / 5:27 pm

Music is a massive passion of mine, so this is the first thing I definately turn to straight away. I find it hard to pamper or have cuddles as my frame of mind is quite bad so to speak. My worst days which are my crash days…all I can do is sleep and with me suffering with insomnia and only usually getting 3 hours max a night sleep, when I crash it’s usually all day. Bad days are horrible and I hate getting them as I’m usually such a happy hyper person. My manic days I do love though, maybe that’s just me I don’t know. Brilliant blog post.

Thank you so much Lisa for your wonderful comment, I know what it’s like with insomnia, it is one of the worst things ever because you feel like a walking zombie, or that is what I felt like, it was horrid! Thank you for taking the time to read my post, it means a lot ?

  11. 14/01/2016 / 7:59 pm

This is such a lovely list of pick-me-ups!

If I’m having a really bad day I will often tell myself not to worry about anything (I am very grateful that often I can drop everything if need be) and do whatever I want, sometimes a walk, sometimes a bit of shopping, or sometimes some treats and my favourite series – when I’m in a bad place and there are loads of things that need to be done I end up running in circles and still not getting anything done!

Thank you so much Becky! I think when you’re having a bad day, sometimes it’s best not try and do your to do list because you end up putting such pressure on yourself it’s best to leave it and focus on your mental well being!?

  12. 14/01/2016 / 8:32 pm

Cuddles are the best, they can really make you feel so warm on those terrible days. When i have a bad mental health day i tend to want to do nothing. So i try to do something productive, then do something i enjoy and then talk about it to a friend. I find that really helps!

Friends are the best right? They understand you so well and the best bit is they’re always there for you no matter what happens! I love a good cuddle, cuddles are literally my davourite!?

  13. 15/01/2016 / 9:27 pm

Fantastic post! I’m very much the same as you, I love having a nice hot shower or bath, getting my pyjamas on, slapping on a face mask and having some peppermint tea! Really agree with the creative outlet part, I love either practising makeup or if I just want to be makeup free and relax I’ll grab a colouring book it’s so therapeutic! I also find that eating healthy when you’re having a ‘down day’ as I call them. Eating fruit and green tea, anything that will internally help you’re digestive system can help you to feel better without you even realising there was something wrong! Also going for a walk, if you’re up for leaving the house. My dog has probably saved my life, taking him out for walks every day keeps me sane. Sorry for such a long comment!!! XOX

Thank you so much Jen it honestly means the world. Hot baths or showers are the best thing to relax yourself, but also when you have a creative outlet it’s perfect for your emotional health. I love all of the things that you’ve listed! I have an obsession with green tea, I drink it everyday, I find it helps with my stomach and I feel so much calmer and more relaxed with it. My colouring book is my new favourite thing, my mum got me another one the other day so I’m quite excited to start doing that! Oh bless your heart, I’m sure your dog doesn’t mind being taken out for walks a lot, I’m sure to be honest he enjoys it! Thank you for such a wonderful comment darling!?

  14. 16/01/2016 / 2:15 pm

Great ideas, and thanks for sharing! I find a hot bath with a Lush bath bomb or bar really helps me relax and escape my own thoughts for a bit. Also colouring in, which I guess is the creative outlet! And reading a good book. In fact, quite a few of these I find helpful for my anxiety and depression when I’m having a bad day. I might try the listening to some upbeat music and singing alone though next time – I have a terrible habit of listening to depressing or slow music when I’m already low. Which probably doesn’t help! Fab post! xo

Please do let me know how you get on if you do try the music, I use that a lot and I feel so much better after a bit of a dance and a sing along. I have the same problem, I end up listening to slow songs and it makes things worse! Stay strong and if there is anything else I can do to help please do let me know!?

  15. 04/04/2016 / 1:24 pm

Ooh I love this post, I think I do all of the above too or a mixture of them at least! Music definitely changes my mood drastically so I’ll go from listening to something really depressing to something upbeat and it’s funny how mellow I’ll get. I’ve only just got into yoga recently and wow it helps when I feel stressed! Great post lovely 🙂

  17. 27/07/2016 / 4:58 pm

You have some really good ideas here! Whenever my anxiety and depression gets too overwhelming I love to pamper myself. I sit down, do my nails, put on a face mask and watch crappy TV. Making plans is a good idea, it always cheers me up to know i’ve got something exciting to look forward too.

Pampering yourself is definitely the most important thing in the world, I think it is important to take time out for you and I love that. I love things to look forward to, and there is nothing better than having plans!?

  18. 05/08/2016 / 3:20 am

I love numbers 3 and 4 especially, and I love doing a combination of both. I agree that working out can really help as well, I don’t always like it during the workout but then afterwards I feel so much better!
