Adult friendships are some of the hardest friendships to keep going, I mean I’ve so lucky that I have some of the best friends in the world and not only that, we all have our own lives. And let’s be honest, life really does get in the way sometimes, I mean we can’t help it. The thing is, when we are at school we would see each other everyday, it was in some respects easier to keep a friendship right? You’d walk to school together, be in classes together, text all night, I mean it was easier!
Over the last few months, I’ve learned so much about my friendships and most important my adult friendships and honestly how much they have changed since I was about 14. I mean of course they’re gonna change, chatting about dream matte mousse, who we fancy and all that is very different from the conversations we have now. So what have I learned about my adult friendships?
1. You don’t need to talk everyday
I don’t talk to all my friends everyday, I mean I barely talk to my husband. I think it is amazing if you do have the opportunity to speak to your friends everyday, you’re an inspiration! I really do struggle to find time to message all the time but as soon as you meet up or you message you just fall back into your normal routine with them. You could go so long without seeing them but it will literally feel like yesterday when you were together.
2. You need to make time for each other
Even though I don’t speak to my friends everyday, you still need to make some kind of effort with them, just dropping them a text, make sure they’re okay, just check in on them. I mean it doesn’t take much just to drop someone a text while you’re travelling, or before you eat dinner, just a little something! If you value the friendship make sure you put a little effort in and it will bloom!
3. Treat your friends the way you would want to be treated
In life you always treat people the way you would want to be treated, that was the way that I was brought up as a child. And especially with your friends, it is even more important that you treat people the way that you would want to be treated!
4. Sometimes you grow apart and that is okay
We all grow up and grow everyday and sometimes we outgrow friendships and do you know what, as much as it hurts, it’s okay. I’m still a firm believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason and sometimes some friendships that we make aren’t supposed to last forever. I mean I’m not saying it isn’t painful, but some friendships are meant to fall apart.
5. If you have toxic friends, you need to cut them off
If some friendships don’t bring you joy, don’t make you happy, don’t bring you joy then maybe you need to cut those people out of your life. There is literally only so much that you can do in your life with people, there is only so much that you can take, so it’s important to put your happiness first!

I actually don’t have any friends that I see and haven’t for a few years. I like to spend time on my own and I don’t find it easy to form friendships at all. I have one friend that lives in the US & even if we don’t speak for months when we next speak it’s like picking up where we left off. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have some female friends that could pop round for a movie night, or whatever. I guess that is the only trouble with being housebound for the last 7 yrs+ I have cut people out of my life in the past when I have felt that the friendship was toxic for me. The sort where you give and they just take take take. It’s hard to do but you have to for your own sanity. x
I can totally understand how difficult that would be for you my lovely, especially being housebound, but don’t forget how wonderful you are darling! xxx
I dont have any adult friends really, just online ones, i cut my friends off a long time ago and i never see anyone now.
Online friends are just as amazing my lovely! xxxx
alot of my adult friends are online, which is okay, i think it helps that its online as I am not the most social human and find meeting people harder than talking to them through a screen
Online friends are amazing, and having a screen between you can give a bit more confidence if you’re shy! xxxx
Adult friendships can be a blessing and a curse! You don’t need to see each other everyday but you need to make time which can be so hard but so worth it. Loved this post!

Thank you so much my lovely that means the world! xxxx
I’ve had horrible experiences with friendships as an adult and unfortunately, I don’t have many now. It makes me really sad sometimes, especially knowing that a lot of my old friends gave up on me after I developed bad anxiety xxx
You’ve always got me as a friend my darling! xxxx
I find it’s as you get older you learn hard truths about friendships. I have less friends now but the ones I do have are the ones I can go through anything with x
I think it is more about the quality of your friendships rather than quantity! xxxx
Agree so much with number 5. You only need positive people in your life xx
Exactly, negativity isn’t necessary! xxxx
I love this so much. One of my best friends I only see 4 times a year, we barely text, but every time we meet up we do a huge catch up – it is incredible, and wouldn’t change it for the world. I still have toxic friendships though, which isn’t good, but the majority of my friends now are the most incredible people I know, internet blogger friends are a huge part of my life now too – which I never would have expected before!

I totally agree, internet friends have become some of the people I can rely on so much, they’re always so supportive! xxxx
I actually think it’s so important to make time for each other – it’s what myself and my friends have always done but it is harder now that we have jobs etc x

I totally agree, just a small message can make the world of difference though! xxxx
So true! One of my closest friends lives a few hours away and we’ve been good friends for so long.

I think when your friendship is that strong you don’t always have to see each other every day! xxxx
Yes, this is so true! My best friend and I forget to reply to eachother half the time, can’t find time to meet, but when we need eachother we are there.
Exactly, the most important thing is when you need them, they’re there! xxxx
adult friendship are so much nicer because they work so differently but just make sense
I totally agree, they’re super hard to balance sometimes with life but so worth it! xxxx
I am so surprised, after reading the comments, to know I’m not the only one! I’m socially awkward. I would love to have some friends that weren’t online but I have such a hard time making friends now as an adult.
Great post! Much love!💜
You’re not the only one my lovely, and you’re not alone! xxxx
