Being A Perfectionist Is Killing My Creativity

I’m a perfectionist I admit it. Everything has to be just right, I put myself under pressure and honestly I feel like it is killing every creative part of me in my body. Being creative is something I really enjoy, it gives me one of the best outlets for my thoughts and feelings, it just gives me so much and right now I feel like the fact that I’m being such a bloody perfectionist I feel just deflated. Over the weekend I think it finally hit me how much of a perfectionist I really am.

So over the weekend I had a little bit of blog work to do, I needed to take some blog photos, I mean don’t get me wrong I normally love taking my blog photos and I take a lot of time to just get them right, but on Saturday it resulted in me being in tears.

There is literally nothing that I love more than creating photos, but do you know when you spend hours trying to get your photos just the way you want them, with your signature style and then it just all goes to pot. It doesn’t happen and you end up with something that you basically think is a pile of poo.

I mean that doesn’t mean that everyone else would think it was a pile of poo but when you look at something and it isn’t what you expected, it really does hurt a lot, mainly because I feel like I am failing at being a good blogger.

It has been a struggle to be honest because I feel like being a perfectionist is ruining my blog. I think in blogging it is so hard, because everyone is just so good and the standard is just so incredible that it just adds fuel to everything.

So how the bloody hell am I going to deal with this?

Where the hell do I go from here?

I’m definitely trying to let go of being a perfectionist, I am trying my best to just take a deep breath and just remember that nothing is perfect, it doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect in every way, as long as I am enjoying creating that should be what is important.

In terms of my photos I’m just going to try my best to switch it up a bit, experiment and continue to do my thing.

I honestly love blogging so much, and I don’t want to just stop, because honestly it has been one of the best things for me, but I really need to work on being such a bloody perfectionist.

Life isn’t perfect and I honestly don’t think my blog has to be either, at the end of the day it is an extension of me and I need to remember to enjoy it.

Are you a perfectionist? Do you relate to what I’ve been feeling? Let me know in the comments!

I can definitely relate to this, lovely! It makes blogging EXTREMELY difficult some days. There are occasions when I will write a post, and there won’t be anything wrong with it, but because it’s not 100%, I’ll either abandon it altogether or spend hours tweaking it to try and get the wording exactly how I want it.

For what it’s worth, you’re doing an amazing job! Your blog is gorgeous, your photos are fantastic and your writing is engaging. I 100% understand your struggles when it comes to perfectionism, but I’m glad to see you’re going to try and put it to the back of your mind and keep doing what you’re doing. You’re one of my favourite bloggers, and I think it would be a big shame if it were to put you off.

Exactly it is so hard isn’t it? And you end up emotionally beating yourself up and it is just an absolute struggle.

Thank you so much my darling that really does mean a lot to me, I’m just trying so hard to work on being such a perfectionist and honestly not let it stop me from doing my thing and excelling in something I’m passionate about! xxxx

I understand exactly where you are coming from. Being a perfectionist is hard sometimes and it can be so disheartening, but try not to let it stop you from doing your thing as fabulously as you are. You are one of the bloggers I look up to, so remember: It’s the leap that counts. Not the landing. It’s the leap that counts. Not the results. It’s the leap that counts. Not what anyone who sees you take flight thinks about your journey.
Keep excelling and doing your thing because you’re doing it awesomely!

  • Agh Amie, I can totally relate. I’ve got SO frustrated with taking blog photos before because nothing I’m doing is remotely near to these stunning photos I see on my feed, over and over again. Such a difficult part of blogging!

I’m SUCH a perfectionist. It’s proper killed my creativity over the last year, and I hate to say it, but comparing myself and my blog to everyone has just got me down. Anyway yeah, SO RELATE.

I think anybody who is creative is somewhat of a perfectionist. Whenever I get overwhelmed and think my work is a “pile of poop” I just step back and come back to whatever I’m working on later. ♥

I can totally relate, Amie! I’ve had a million ideas for my website & books, but I always get too afraid to go through with them out of fear of it not being good enough or “perfect”. All we can do is our best!

    • amiecadwallader@outlook.com says:

Exactly, as long as you put your heart and soul into something it will always be fabulous! xxxx

I think finding perfection to work could be a little hard. You may feel disappointments and frustration from time to time. I think as long as you know what you are doing and you like it, all goes well.

It seems that everyone goes for flatlays these days in the blogging world, but I don’t – I have other photos instead. But I do see what you mean, whenever I do have a product to photograph, I always make sure it looks great for those who are going to read my posts. It’s so annoying being a perfectionist, but can also mean that you always want the best for your content.

This is a great post that I’m sure lots of us relate to!
I do struggle with it on my blog, but it’s also mostly in my creative writing that I struggle with it! I sit down and stare at a blank page because I just think that I’ll never be able to create the piece that I want to, so I can’t start.

  • Chloe says:

Wow I relate to this so much! I am such a creative that I get obsessed with everything being perfect. The when I mess up my creativity goes. It is a hard lesson to learn that not everything is perfect. Just chill the creativity will come back.
