Self Care Isn’t Always Easy But There Are Simple Things You Can Do

I talk about self care a lot on my blog, I feel like it comes part and parcel with my mental health. If you had asked me about 2 years ago what self care was, I would be like, umm what now? I mean seriously if you asked me to practice self care I probably wouldn’t know where to start.

As someone who has been through a mental health struggle, I feel like I know what triggers me, I know what I need to do to keep me emotionally, physically and mentally happy.

Self care isn’t always all about taking a bubble bath, turning off your phone and having time away. It isn’t that simple.

If there is anything I’ve learned over the last few months is self care is different for everyone, it helps to find a way to manage your thoughts, your feelings and everything you need to process about your life.

Sometimes self care consists of having a bit of a cry under a duvet, putting on a good movie and staying in bed all day, other days it can be getting dressed up, putting a full face of make up on and preparing to face my fears and challenge the world on anything and everything.

There is so much more to self care than meets the eye, sometimes it is the important things in life that we need that are just as important as having a bubble bath.

Over the last couple of weeks, there are certain things that I am now including in my self care routine that I never realised were as important as they really are.

So what are they?

1. Remember it’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling

I’m a very emotional person with me it is like an emotional rollercoaster, but do you know what acknowledging that you’re feeling what you’re feeling is the first step in moving forward.

2. Surrounding yourself with understanding people

Lately I’ve been cutting certain people out of my life, mainly because they either don’t speak to me, they don’t even understand what is going on in my life, and no matter how hard you try some people just aren’t supposed to stick around in your life.

3. Remember it’s okay to talk about anything

I’ve been learning this one lately, mainly because I’ve been going through a lot of emotional stuff and being able to talk about it with my husband helps.

4. Listening to your body

I’m the kind of person that has never listened to my body, if I feel unwell I’m generally the kind of person that will do whatever it takes to get everything I need to done, keep going. Unless I’m in a hospital bed or I can’t see, I’ll generally just try to keep going and get everything done. Life waits for no one.

However after the last few weeks with a lot of migraines which have caused me to be sick, and be resigned to my bed, I have realised that sometimes you need to take a break, it’s like stop Amie, take a break. Whatever you need to get done, can wait until you’re better. Stop pushing yourself to breaking point.

Listening to your body is a great tip, something I’m not good at at all, but hopefully I’ll be able to take myself to bed to recover rather than struggling on through my work.

I totally agree, I’m definitely the worst for not listening to my body, but I’m trying to do it more and more and do what my body needs from me! xxxx

  • I always find self-care the hardest in the times when I need it the most. If I’m in a positive space I’m like YES SELF CARE all the baths, candles, reading, pampering. Which is all great but self-care is what you need to do when you just don’t want to get out of bed all day and your mental health is at rock bottom. But obviously that’s when it’s the hardest. So these are important tips 🙂
