I’ve talked about mental health regularly on my blog, lately however I’ve had so much anxiety surrounding social media, I mean it has been constant. I struggle with anxiety anyway, but on social media it’s never been as bad as it is right now. As a blogger you know you’re going to be using social media on a regular basis, whether it is sharing blog posts, taking part in blog chats or interacting with your friends. Let’s remember that social media can be absolutely amazing, I have met so many fantastic people through it and not only that it has opened so many doors for me! Lately however there has just been this constant worry, the stress of it all, and to be honest it is taking an emotional toll on me. When you worry about something that honestly isn’t that important it gets to you. Social media isn’t the be all and end all, social media is an amazing platform, but like anything it can always have it’s downfalls.
I’m the kind of person that as soon as I upload something I always overthink everything, like oh no is this going to come across in the wrong way, will I offend someone, are people going to think I am a bad person? Not only that I end up panicking, feeling ridiculously emotional and just wanting to fade into the background. You know the usual.
I have been taking important steps to deal with the way I am feeling, and I’ve also been changing my mind set about the way I feel about social media.
1. Take regular social media breaks
There was recently a blog chat about blog breaks & also social media breaks if I remember rightly. I can’t remember the blog chat but it definitely has been on my mind since my social media anxiety got worse. Taking time away can really help. I feel like social media can put so much pressure on you like I said in my post the other day (you can read that post all about comparing our lives and rushing ourselves here) time away can give you some chill time.
2. Uninstall the app
We all get notifications throughout the day, whether it is Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat if you still use it, we will get some kind of notification. Sometimes to get a proper break away, No more app, no more worries about notifications!
3. Unfollow people who trigger you
I know this might be an easy one, but if someone is causing your anxiety to be worse than normal, then hit that unfollow button. You can mute on Twitter, but I don’t think you can do that on Instagram, so unfollowing is a way to just completely clear your mind, not have to worry about them popping up on your social media.
4. Be yourself on social media
This might sound so simple, but always be yourself, I mean I’m not saying be rude or anything, but what I am saying is share your thoughts and feelings (99.99% of the time you’re not alone in those thoughts!) As long as you’re not offending anyone, being nasty to others, you’ll have the right people around you. You are in control of your social media.
5. Surround yourself with good friends
Good friends understand the struggles, they will support you through basically everything, and not only that they’re the people you can vent to when you need to get everything out your system. These are the best people in the world, and I have some of the greatest people as my friends!
It’s important to remember that social media isn’t everything, if you’re overwhelmed, take time out, it will be okay, I promise!
Do you struggle with social media anxiety? Do you struggle with these feelings? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you so much angel, it is small steps in the right direction, that is what I am trying to do! xxxx
I really adore this blog post babe, I can relate to a lot of it so much. All of the points you made are so important, and I agree that you need to look after your own mental health instead of worrying about others. Thank you for sharing 🌸✨

Thank you so much angel! I think for our own peace of mind we all need to take time away! Social media can be so overwhelming! xxxx
I think lately, so many people are worried about posting certain things for the fear of coming across in the wrong way. We’ve all seen it on Twitter, when something is taken out of context and that individual gets bombarded with hate tweets. I’ve been on that end of things before, it’s not nice and I certainly don’t post half of the things I actually want to anymore! xxx
I know what you mean angel, it is so exhausting though, I’m so worried about offending people I end up getting myself in a right mess! I kind of censor myself now to be on the safe side!xxxxx
I have this thing where I feel like I’m addicted to it and it’s really been affecting my life how much I “rely” on social media – I’ve found that deleting apps that I worry over has been helpful, but keeping apps that I actually need to run my business, but turning off push notifications has been an absolute god send. I no longer get notifications popping up and distracting me from what I’m doing and if I wanna see if someones messaged me (which more than likely they haven’t) then I have to physically go into the app to have a look. I find that I get anxious over fear of missing out, I get anxious over who’s seen my post and how many likes it has, when in retrospect, who actually gives a crap, you know? Do what you love and do what you enjoy regardless of what other people think. There will always be people that enjoy what you post and there will always be people that don’t. I hope that makes sense and wasn’t just a ramble, haha!
Turning push notifications off is a good one actually! I hadn’t thought of that one! I know what you mean about the fear of missing out, I feel like I miss so much when I’m not online but lately I’ve got to the point where I think am I actually bothered by it now? I just need to do what is best for me, and if it means coming off social media for a while then that is exactly what I’m going to do! xxxx
My favorite thing to do lately is put my phone on Do Not Disturb! It actually is right now. It keeps me from waiting around for messages, calls, and notifications. It’s too distracting and keeps me from work. It helps me feel more at ease when I’m able to go into my own world.

Oooh yes! Do not disturb comes in so handy I totally forgot about that! I think we need a do not disturb on life sometimes, that would come in handy! xxxx

Taking breaks is so important, I think it is necessary to just keep our mental health in check xxxx
I can relate so much to this post! I turnt off notifications on several social media apps, so I don’t get the anxious feeling of always answering and the need to always be ‘online’. This post was well written, I really liked it 🙂
Turning off notifications is necessary, I think time away gives me a lot of clarity too when it comes to social media! Real life doesn’t revolve around social media xxxx
I definitely suffer with social media anxiety, as I don’t have a poppin’ Instagram feed or Tweet about what’s popular. I try to take regular breaks, but I always fail.

I know what you mean, but your social media doesn’t define you as a person darling, you’re incredible just by being you! xxxx
I always forget to take breaks from social media, find myself addicted to it. One day I just need to get rid of the apps and have a day to myself. Great post, reminded me that I need a little me time now and then, away from social media.

I’m glad you liked my post angel! Always take time for yourself, social media doesn’t define you! xxxx
I regularly take breaks from social media to keeo myself sane x
I don’t blame you, social media can be so overwhelming! xxxx
I ALWAYS forget to take breaks from social media, and when I do take breaks it seems to be unintentional but I’m always so glad when I do! I think especially as bloggers, we rely so much on social media that it’s important to remember that there’s an outside world too!

I do too angel! I think lately though with my mental health being the way it has been, I’ve kind of forced myself into taking breaks because if I don’t I’ll crash! Social media doesn’t define me and it’s important to remember that! xxxx
i love this amie and i so agree on unfollowing. it’s been AMAZING for me! and muting on twitter! !

Oh god yes, the mute button comes in so handy! And is very much needed! xxxx
I am loving this post! Social media can be stressful sometimes! And it so hard to disconnect! I am realizing that i give way too much important to what can people think of me or that they might unfollow me if i am not active on socials all the time. Unfollowing people who triggers me is a good idea and i have done it quite a lot lately! xx corinne
It is so important to unfollow people who trigger you just for your own peace of mind, it really helps! xxxx
There’s been so many triggers for so many people
Regarding social media and anxiety. I’ve unfollowed so many people this month who sees to bask in the drama! I’ve also taken off notifications from my phone so I only see it all out of choice!
Oooh taking off notifications is a brilliant idea! I think unfollowing really helps to keep me feeling myself! xxxx
Love this post Amie, it can be so hard to get away from social media but when you do get a break it’s the best feeling ever!!
