5 Things I’ve Learned From 5 Years Of Marriage

On 14th December, Paul and I will have been married 5 years. I’m genuinely not sure where the time has gone to be quite honest, it literally feels like yesterday we were planning our day, checking out to our venue and finishing off the final touches for our day.

Marriage has been such a whirlwind and it is definitely not easy, but having a partner that understands you and vice versa makes marriage much more fun. Not only that it has taught me so much about myself and been such a earning curve. Here are a few things I’ve learned in the last 5 years.

1. Going To Bed Angry Is Actually Okay

There are going to be so many times when your partner annoys you, you fall out, have an argument, and actually going to bed angry is okay. Sometimes a good nights sleep, some quiet and waking up with a fresh perspective can help. Any extra time you have to calm down can really help, I know it really helps me!

Just make sure that when you wake up, you have calmed down and you are prepared to talk through everything.

2. You Will Change, But That Is Okay

I’ve changed so much over the last 5 years, I’ve gone down so many different roads, and so has Paul, but we have changed together, we have grown as a couple and we are in a great place. We have the opportunity to grow in our careers, in our passions and share those amazing moments together.

The beauty about you changing and growing together is you get to see this incredible person achieving everything they have wanted. I have been with Paul since I was 17, and I’m definitely not the same person I was when I was 17 and neither is Paul, so seeing these changes, just makes me love him more because I know how hard he has worked to get to where he is.

3. Communication Is Always Important

Sometimes I’m not the best communicator, because I do get incredibly anxious, I tend to trip over my words and not get out the way that I would like to. Bottling everything up inside isn’t healthy, it doesn’t work. It makes life difficult, the thing is with partners, they are there through everything, through the good, the bad and the ugly. They are the ones that will support us, make us smile and give all the hugs and advice possible.

It is okay to be vulnerable, which is something I’m trying to learn.

4. Appreciate Everything

I am beyond grateful for everything that Paul has done for me, he has been there through my most difficult patches, and vice versa, but one thing I really do appreciate is the small things he does for me everyday. For example making sure that I have lunch for work, making me smile when I’ve had a long day at work and giving me lots of cuddles everyday.

Always appreciate the small things your partner does everyday, even if it seems small, they make your life much easier.

5. Laugh Often & Try Not To Be So Serious

I’m my own worst enemy when it comes to this because I tend to take life way too seriously, but having a husband that is genuinely so carefree and has the worst jokes makes life easier. Never forget the importance of laughing together, Paul tends to call me half pint because I’m particularly short and I go with it now, and I have lots of nicknames for him, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Being married to someone who is not only your husband but your best friend is literally so much fun, because you get the chance to share every struggle, every smile, every special moment with them, and I am beyond grateful for that.

I’m not married or anything, but I totally am on board with the going to sleep angry thing. It boggles my mind how the opposite is such a commonly shared piece of advice. Almost every argument I’ve gotten in with my family or every bad/sad mood I’ve been in has all faded to the point of near non-existence after I slept. Of course, big arguments or issues won’t necessarily go away fully, but being calmer and able to rethink your stance or its importance the next day in a fresher frame of mind can help a lot.

Great points here Amie…and so true. I’m one of those that hated going to bed angry but over the years realised it just makes things worse to try and communicate and come to agreement when you’re both exhausted. Lol.

  • What a lovely post Amie! I’m not married but I’m sure many people can take these points on board x

  • Aww I love this! Happy anniversary!
I completely agree with taking time after an argument. We all need to let the steam cool but it irks me to go to bed without resolving issues so it’s important to me to make sure we’re on the same page and communication is constantly flowing. And yess! Ensuring your partner feels appreciated is so important. To let them know that even the little things that they may not think is important IS in fact important and appreciated by you, would make them feel better and could brighten their day.
Thanks for sharing this doll! It made me smile! 😆

  • I’ve commented on this one instead of your latest one as this one resonated with me. I’ve been married since August this year and we get things wrong a lot! As a couple and as individuals.

But we know we have that underlying respect and love for each other which will always come first.

We make each other laugh and that’s a massive part of why we work – I’m glad you and Paul can continue to thrive after 5 years and I hope you find ways to enhance your relationship over time.

I’ve been married for 24yrs this 16th December. Though now it’s only in name as such as we severed romantic relations over 5 years ago, as my husband came out as gay. It was hard at first but we still live as a family unit with 4 of our kids (all teens or older) and are the best of friends. I think friendship is crucial in marriage, that and trust are the foundation of it. If you don’t have either of those then it makes it very hard work. Congrats on your 5yr Anniversary! 😀

Ahh how delightful. I smiled all the way reading this. This also works in relationships and friendships. Appreciation is the best one of them all. Sometimes we can get so caught up in our heads that we forget the little things that people do for us – those are the magical moments to live for! Thank you for your post. We feel warm and fuzzy xx

Such a beautiful post! Yes, it is so nice to meet someone who totally understands you. I’ve been with my husband for about six years and I am so thankful. Life hasn’t always been easy and we’ve had some really tough times, but knowing someone completely has your back is priceless, isn’t it.

    Lots of love, Helen x
