We are all getting used to a new normal, wearing masks, working from home, life has changed since the beginning of the year, but I’ve found it easier to adapt than I initially thought I would. However the one thing that I’ve struggled with the most is switching off from work, mainly because I’m a massive workaholic and love my job. I always want to be really productive, achieve so much, but the one thing I tend to forget is you need to look after yourself before you’re able to be productive.
01. Look At Your Space
I’ve been very lucky as I’ve managed to set up a desk area with 2 screens, with an additional table for my notebooks, so having a sectioned off space where you can work will definitely make all the difference. Try to separate where you’re working from where you’re relaxing, you don’t want to have you chill out area near where you work. If you’re not able to do this, try to make your space where you are relaxing and calming as possible.
02. Set Up A Healthy Routine
I am a sucker for planning out my day before I log on, but I also block it out in my calendar so my content manager knows what I’m doing and if there are any meetings in my calendar they are already there. Not only that opening the curtains, getting dressed, eating breakfast and a workout to keep your mind focused on what you need to do. By sticking to a routine it helps me to ensure that I switch off at the end of the day.
03. Find Something Your Love To Do
After work lately I’ve been curling up and reading my book for a while, just to relax after a super busy day. Not only that I’ve also had Animal Crossing to catch up on because I’d managed to neglect my town, but I’ve managed to catch up. Having an activity you can do just to relax can work wonders, it needs to be completely unrelated to work.
04. Remember To Take Breaks
I’m the worst for this to be honest, mainly because I get so stuck into projects that I forget I need a break, so I’ve resorted to adding it to my Outlook calendar to make sure I take a break. Even going out for a short walk on your lunch break can make a difference, I tend to wander into the garden with a cup of coffee during my lunch break so I am away from my computer and I don’t feel the urge to dip back into work during a break.
05. Don’t Use Your Phone 1 Hour Before Bed & Remove Work Emails From Your Phone
I’ve switched to turning my phone onto black and white after a certain point in the evening, so I don’t aimlessly scroll through social media and it has actually really helped. By removing your work emails from your phone you don’t feel like you need to keep working outside of your hours and you also get a better work/life balance too.
06. Have An Easy Bed Time Routine
I’m a sucker for a routine, my husband says it takes me forever to get ready for bed, but there are a few things that I do on a regular basis that help me to relax best. I have a shower, moisturise, do my skincare routine, take any meds, spray my pillow mist and read my book for a while with my phone on grey scale mode and then put my eye mask on a few minutes before I go to sleep.
Everyone’s routines are different, but finding things that work for you can really help and with coronavirus I think it is about finding ways to adapt to our new normal.

These are great and effective ways to switch off from work Amie, I tend to stay off my phone before bedtime as I think it’s the best time switch off and unwind x

Love this post! I have found myself working from home (and will be until at least March)… So, I found that using my boyfriend’s desk/monitors in our second bedroom is a great way to separate home and work time. When I am done for the day I shut the door and don’t return to that room until the next morning 🙂

I usually do no. 3 & 4. I need to practice no.5 as well. Hehehe. These are good tips. Thank you for sharing.
I need to do this way more often – it’s been harder now that we are working from home
These are some great points, super helpful and important! Thanks for sharing ❤️

Relaxing is so much easier when you move away from your workspace into an open or cosy area. I love to bake something or read a book; anything to take my mind off work until it is time to get back to it.
Thanks for sharing!
Since becoming freelance I’ve been in need of having a healthier relationship with working and rest time! I don’t switch off at all really x
I’m so bad at this! Thank you for the reminder, I need to work on keeping a set work routine x

I’m definitely going to switch my phone to black and white after a certain time! I do tend to look at it too much in the evenings. My evening routine is similar to yours. Blocking out the calendar with what you are doing is so much better then my boss knows what I’m doing and where I need more/less work!
I need to try taking time off my work!
Switching your phone to black and white is a great idea, might have to give this ago. My evening routine isn’t great but it doesn’t help that my bedroom is also my living space and creative area. Loved reading your post some wonderful tips that I need to try out. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Great advice. It is a little harder to switch off from work now that work and home are merged! I find a jog clears my mind particularly as I sometimes wouldn’t leave the house all day otherwise x
It is so important to be able to switch off from work! These are great tips.
These tips are so important as it’s crucial to spend time away from work, especially if you do it from home! I completely agree with not using your phone an hour before bed and creating a new work space x

I find switching off from work mode SO HARD as I work for myself. But I really need to try harder and establish a more solid routine for myself x
Switching off my phone for a couple of hours before bed is something I’ve been trying to do recently – the endless Twitter doomscrolling is not conducive to a good night’s sleep! x
Thanks for sharing your tips, I switch of my phone as soon I get in so I don’t get distracted by it, plus I find watching TV shows helps somewhat to relax, even my diabetes has a rough night for me!!

These are brilliant suggestions for switching off.
I miss working from home but I am glad to have a place away from work which instantly makes me leave behind and switch out of office mode.
But I’ll be using these though when I take down time from my blog x
Great tips. I don’t work from home and I’ve gone in to work throughout the pandemic so it’s easier to separate work and home for me but I do have a lot of tough, stressful days and I always find going to a walk after work helps to chill me out and clear my mind.
I love this. Although I’ve been fine with the coping with work side of things during lockdown, I definitely feel that I’ve struggled more to get the balance because I don’t have the commute to separate life and home and tend to just go straight from work into something like blogging, when I need that time to disconnect for a while. Really enjoyed reading this, there’s some great tips here. Thanks for sharing.
Having a routine is something I am trying my level best on… The fact that I am so laid back in life yet trying to achieve so many things at once and completely disorganized makes me think how bloggers like you make it up… It’s all the hard work and consistency you all put up and go through… I have a long way and maybe soon I might be able to step out of my comfort zone… Hopefully.
This is such an important post!!! Something that I really need to read (quite a few times)
I am actually the worse for not being able to separate my chill time and work time 😭 thanks for the tips!

I one of those that like to keep working even when it’s time for me to clock out of work. It’s so bad especially now that my workplace is at home. I can’t seem to break away and close my computer until the work is completely done. I may have to start setting an alarm or putting it on my calendar to stop working when I shouldn’t be working after hours. Thanks for sharing xxx
These are all tips that I do as well! I find reading really unwinds me after a days work!! Some great tips here that really do work and are so important!!x
These are really helpful tips! I’m definitely one who struggles to switch off from work, so these will really help me. Hehe, I love a good bedtime routine too x

So many great tips in this post. I’ve now set up an office space away from the kitchen and living room so that I can get away from work even though I don’t leave the house! It has already started to help!
Rosie
I’ve certainly found it more difficult to switch off from work since I’ve started WFH. Now I’ve moved house it’s much better though as I have a dedicated room to work in and I can just leave and shut the door on it at the end of the day. Before I just had my laptop set up at the table in my kitchen so it was like a constant reminder! I’ve found that reading before bed rather than scrolling through my phone is also really helpful too 😊 thanks for sharing!
These are such great ideas and I’m going to take them on board and look at my workspace! Definitely need to make more time to relax and distract my brain!

Taking breaks is very important. It helps you to relax and the better at work! Thanks for sharing!
Sorting out your space is such a big one! I think dedicating certain sections of your space to certain activities really makes all the difference (if you have the space to be able to!).

LOVE this post and I’m a huge advocate for no phones before bed! X
Important tips shared I really need to start taking breaks this is some sort of a reminder for me thank you for sharing.
This is great Aime! Switching off is always something I’m struggled with (mostly due to years of jobs where I’m required to be on call all the time). I’m working on setting some boundaries!
Hi Amie! I so enjoyed reading this post. So fun to read about your night time routine. What are your favourite skincare products to use?
