The world that we live in right now is incredibly difficult, our NHS professionals & key workers who are doing everything they can to keep us safe while they risk their own health. On Friday I posted an emotional post on Instagram, explaining that personally my mental health had been struggling ad that working from home had been really tough for me but I completely understand how important it is for me to be at home to save lives. So how can you look after your mental health while on lockdown? Here are things that I’m doing that have helped me.
Talk About How You Feel
This is such an important step, one that I’ve found to be incredibly helpful. Knowing that you are not alone is sometimes half the battle. A lot of people right now are struggling because we find ourselves in unchartered territory, and it can be an incredibly overwhelming feeling, but one thing I do know, is we are not alone in this and we will get there.
Set Realistic Goals
I’m always the worst for this because I am such an overachiever, I don’t like to let people down, and sometimes the goals that I choose are not realistic. I cannot be expected to conquer the world in 8 hours, it just isn’t going to happen. Make a point of writing down a to do list of things that need to be done first and ot the same at lunch time, that way you have your day set up and if anything does come up you know exactly what needs to be done.
Focus On Yourself
Focus on what you are doing, what you can do to make your life easier, to hep you be able to cope with the incredibly uncertain world that we find ourselves in. Everyone copes differently when it comes to things like this and when you start comparing yourself to how others are coping you’re only setting yourself up for more upset. Focus on what you are doing and let others cope with the way they do.
Ask For Help
This is something I still genuinely struggle with, I hate to admit when I need help, mainly because I am way to stubborn for my own good, and I also have way too much pride. I don’t like to put other people out of their own way, or even sometimes admit that something is wrong. You are never alone and asking for help is sometimes necessary step to make sure that we are able to cope with everything.
Cry If You Need To
Sometimes a good old fashion cry really helps me. It releases all of the options that have built up inside and it finally feels like someone has pressed the release button. Like I said in my Instagram post (if you didn’t see it) there genuinely hasn’t been a day where I haven’t cried or sobbed my heart out, but I’m working on it. I’m determined that there will be a couple of days next week where I don’t cry and I don’t let my anxiety overpower me.
Know that even though you are struggling a lot right now, that you are doing the best thing or yourself, your loved ones and our incredible NHS. The true heroes of all this are our amazing healthcare professionals, our emergency services and key workers.
Do your best with everything going on right now it is all anyone can ever ask of you.

Self care is so important right now. I would also say unplugging can help. The general stress of being on social media all the time or watching the news can really impact our mental outlook.
I love all of these suggestions – especially that crying is totally acceptable. Sometimes that is all we need, to let our feelings out. This is a great time to take care of ourselves better than ever. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve never been so glad that I can chat to my therapist over the phone once a week to chat about everything that is going on in my head. I’ve been having a couple of cries over the last few days but I think that’s because I don’t have anyone at home to keep me company through this. I’m going to jot these down to see if they help! We’re here for you too, hun.

This is such a great post. I love how you included that crying is okay. Because sometimes we just need to let it all out! Thanks for sharing this and stay safe and well my friend!
Great tips, Amie. There’s absolutely no right or wrong way to deal with this – it’s so unprecedented. I’ve been watching a lot of Desperate Housewives which is helping me!
Such a great post for such uncertain times. It definitely all takes its toll on mental health.
My work is currently still operating but unsure how long for.
Talking is a great one and makes such a difference.
This post is so so so so important. I really hope that it reaches as many people are possible!

Such a great post. Have to agree, crying is such a release and can make it all feel a bit better can’t it? So important to not put extra pressure on yourself, it can always save for another day.
It’s not fully hit me yet, as I still have my daily routine of going to work (NHS) but I think when the ‘peak’ hits, that’s when it will hit me.
Stay safe and take care!

This is a great post, looking after your mental health is so important especially with this lockdown. I am a front line worker as I am actually worried to go back to work after this break, as I don’t want to get poorly or make my family poorly. It is such a worrying time x
Self care is so important at the moment and last night I had a pamper to make myself feel better! xx
Ah, this is such a great post, Amie, thank you so much. We need to remember that these are unprecedented times and normal rules just don’t apply. Stay safe, lovely xx
It’s so important to look after ourselves especially in current times of crisis. I’m my own worst enemy but I’m trying my best to feel positive, whilst still working at least 3 or 4 days per week. I’m either in a completely positive mindset preaching about how good I feel, or I’m non existent on social media, lounging in bed all day and feeling sorry for myself.
Thank you for sharing such thoughtful advice x

What a great post with great tips and reminders, thanks.
Setting goals is so important to keep you focused and active. Great post! Stay safe out there.
This honestly such a great post! I’m finding this time quite hard at the moment, but I’m lucky that I’ve got my friends and family to support me. This is such a weird time, but it’s so important that we take care of ourselves and others!
Great tips! Its blog posts like this that can really offer support to a large audience. Thank you for taking the time to write this 🙏🏻
Selfcare is key right now and staying connected. Isolating can quickly spiral out of control.
Thank you for sharing, Amie! These are great tips and suggestions! It’s such a strange time with so much uncertainty, you are completely right, we need to be especially kind to ourselves at the moment. Talking about our feelings is so important, I think we are all finding this hard and can relate to each other. Take care lovely <3 xx

Thank you so much for this post. I feel like everywhere you turn people are talking about COVID-19 without thinking about how it affects others. Definitely sharing this with all of my friends who just need a breather.
Stay Safe 💕
Wonderful post. I’ve definitely cried many times. I really like that your mentioned set realistic goals. Thanks for writing this!
Talking about how you’re feeling and taking time for self care are both so important at the moment! Great post x

Some great tips. Setting realistic goals is such a fab one. Sometimes I set goals that are just so far fetched… like I’m not going to become fluent in French in 2 months and that’s okay lol! Xx

I’m struggling a lot with my mental health right now, too. I’m a bit of an introvert/home-body most of the time anyway, but I feel so trapped at the minute. All of these tips are great, especially the one about having a good cry. It always helps me, it’s almost cleansing haha! I hope you’re doing better this week 🧡

Great tips Amie. I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with this situation. I was feeling really anxious before lockdown but I’m so much happier and calmer now I know the majority of people are inside. I’m sure it will start driving me crazy eventually but it’s been good for my MH so far x

I hope you’re doing ok. I find trying to stick to some kind of routine has helped me. As well as making sure I’m spending time in the garden and going for a walk.
These are all absolutely spot on! A good friend of mine is a psychologist, so naturally I listen to what she says around this kind of thing, and she always says that crying and allowing yourself to cry can be beneficial.
Take care,
Em x
