Learning To Slow Down & Give Myself A Break

Lately I’ve basically been non stop, I mean life has basically been a series of waves, there has always been something going on, we have plans to do something and I’ve got to be honest, as much as I love having these amazing plans, seeing people, going out – it’s exhausting. After a few weeks of basically not switching off and feeling like I’m drowning in a massive to do list and genuinely burning the candle at both ends, my husband made me realise that I genuinely need to slow down. So I’ve been taking steps to try and slow my life down a little bit because going to bed at about 8:30 on a Friday night is definitely not my jam.

It doesn’t have to be massive changes, but there are definitely some things that I’m doing that are making a difference in my life lately.

Prioritise Your Life

This has definitely been one of the more difficult things for me to do. I mean I am the kind of person that genuinely loves organising everything when it comes to where we go, what we do and how we organise our time, but when it comes to prioritising it is hard. I’m putting the most urgent things first, moving things I need to about and making sure that I don’t get myself in an absolute flap over a to do list.

Take Care Of Yourself

Now I have got pretty damn lazy with this one if I’m totally honest. When it comes to self care, it basically comes down to making sure that I drink enough, eat enough and I get enough sleep. That is literally where I’m at right now. There is also so much more that goes into taking care of yourself though, from things like saying no, going out, treating your skin to a face mask, having a bubble bath and doing what makes you happy.

Turn Your Phone Off

There is actually a setting on my Samsung that gives you a wind down option, it changes the settings to make your screen black and white, it changes everything and it is so relaxing. As soon as it changes I know it is time for me to put the phone down and start to wind down myself.

Read A Book

Lately I’ve been getting back into my reading (I actually wrote a post recently about the books I’ve loved) and honestly it has helped me so much, just to slow myself down, to put the breaks on and to just get out of my own head. It has really helped me with my anxiety too which is something I’ve definitely that causes me to feel very exhausted.

Remember That You Can’t Do Everything

I’m very much the kind of person that will try to be everything to everyone, do everything for everyone, but it isn’t actually possible. But sometimes you just need to give yourself a break. Sometimes you need to say no, stop what you’re doing, don’t make any plans and shut off from the world.

These are things that have worked for me and I’m hoping will continue to work for me. You cannot be on the go all of the time without burning the candle at both ends, without exhausting yourself mentally, physically and emotionally. Take a moment to take a deep breath, clear your mind, and remember that being whatever life throws at you, you can get through.

I’ve been actively taking a step back and some time out, and it’s really helping. I think the biggest help was turning my phone off haha.

One thing I am terrible at is thinking I can do about 101 things in one day, I need to slow down and realise that I can’t do it all! xx

Great advice! I especially love the tip to turn your phone off. Phones can be so distracting, and time flies by while I stare at my screen. Thanks for the ideas!

Such an important and wonderful post. We have to slow down in life and remember that we aren’t machines! This is something I’ve been learning too, and although the journey hasn’t been wonderful I think I’m finally getting there.

  • Lovely post. I need to learn to slow down more and not do everything all at once. It’s a struggle, but getting there x

These are excellent ideas to slow down a little. I’ve been struggling a lot recently with working long days and only getting about 5 hours sleep a night which definitely isn’t enough! I think putting the phone down is such a good idea and something we probably all need to do!

Remembering that you can’t do everything is so important as well as taking a break from your phone and reading!
I make sure I always do this now to just switch off for a while!

Love this. I’m trying to learn to have slower evenings rather than try and do all of the things when my kid is asleep. It’s a work in progress!

  • Beka says:

I’m the type of person who will try and do everything for myself, for everybody else, and try balance it all so I’m not letting anybody down, too. I know how it feels to be so burned out by all of that, but feeling like you can’t/don’t want to let anything slip! I also find it hard to prioritise for the same reasons, I think. What do I prioritise first, something “important” or something I want to do, which is equally important in different ways? 🤔

Some great advice, though! I’ll have to take a leaf out of your newly found book and remember to relax, and that everything can’t be done all the time. I hope you’re feeling better and taking some time for you 💖

I’ve just had to take some time myself as depression had reared it’s ugly head. That’s why I’ve only just got around to commenting. So I did take time away from my blog, as I feel that is the thing I feel most stress & pressure from. It really is so important to take that time though. 🙂
