Why I Won’t Let Blog Numbers Define Me

Ah blogging, it’s one of my biggest passions in life. It’s my creative outlet, my biggest challenge, and something that keeps me motivated to keep creating and doing my own thing, however I’ve noticed lately that I’ve become overwhelmed with blog numbers. It’s my own fault really, when you’re surrounded by so many incredible bloggers who absolutely kill it everyday, I feel like I always need to continue to push the envelope. I’m my own worst creative enemy I guess.

With the Instagram algorithm constantly making everyone feel like rubbish because let’s be honest, no one likes to be shadowbanned and no one seeing their Instagram posts.

As I’ve been posting to Instagram I’ve been sitting there wondering, what am I doing wrong? Are my photos not good enough, are my photos not varied enough, honestly I’ve been kind of at a loss with Instagram. Likes have been down and after being shadowbanned last week, I got to the point where I’m just like, I’m gonna post for me, do what I want now.

Blogging is so much more than likes, followers and how many views you get. I mean it’s nice to know that people are seeing how hard you’re working, that people appreciate your writing and everything but in reality your worth isn’t defined by that.

I’ll give you an example, Superdrug are a brand that I work with on a regular basis, I had worked so hard on a photo, and it ended on something like 80 likes. I have about 2600 followers on Instagram and I was like I can totally feel why people get so worked up about. I spent about an hour trying to get that photo, then editing it, not to mention the other 50 that probably look exactly the same but aren’t the same. I was so proud of it, and my husband asked if I was okay. Obviously I told him and he put everything into perspective.

Yes likes are amazing, yes followers are absolutely fabulous, and if you decide to follow me then you’re the best babes in the world, but if you don’t and I’m not your cup of tea, that is also okay!

Likes, followers and all that jazz aren’t what make you an amazing blogger! Putting your heart and soul into a post, doing what you enjoy, sharing what you want and just being yourself, those are the things that make you a great blogger.

It can be quite difficult to not get caught up in the hype of followers, seeing them increase everyday – to be honest mine seem to go down more everyday and I’m 100% okay wit that, but remember your life, your worth as a person and as a blogger will never be defined by the numbers on your screen.

I always say in quite a few of the posts that I do about social media and just life in general, to remember why you started in the first place. Was it really about followers? Nope it was about sharing  your story and having your own corner of the internet.

Put it this way, when you look back on your blogging journey, are you really going to be worried about the amount of followers you had, or are you going to reflect on the opportunities that you had, the friends that you made and the incredible journey that you have had? Probably the latter to be honest.

Social media is just one curated side of your life, don’t let it take over!

It is very easy to get caught up in it all and think it’s all about numbers but it really isn’t. It’s so important to do it for yourself xx

Completely agree, it’s definitely about the creativity, the friendships and the opportunities. Instagram is failing us all lately, at least we’re all in it together I suppose!

Agreed Amie! Numbers can be both motivating and demotivating so it’s better not to focus too much on them. Your blog posts are always so well-written, helpful and relatable. There are so many other positives to blogging <3 xx
