Being Plus Size And Struggling With Fashion

Being plus size personally for me can be such a struggle sometimes, I mean it really can be beyond difficult. It has been made a little bit easier by brands going up to larger sizes, which is amazing, but there is still a massive difference between your ‘regular’ sizes and the plus size range. I really hate the term ‘regular’ sizes because all sizes are beautiful, but I couldn’t think of the right word! I love being unapologetically me, plus size, lumps, bumps and all.

As someone who is plus size I have got a lot of stick for being bigger than a lot of people, and to be quite honest, it’s crap. I am a healthy person, I work out 5 days a week, eat healthy, lots of fruit and vegetables. I actually wrote a post right here about the negativity towards me for being plus size, please give it a read. I know that people tend to feel similar if they are slim too.

Lately I have really been struggling with fashion in general, the weather is getting colder and finding clothes that I like, that make me feel confident is honestly the most difficult thing in the entire world.

We all want clothes that make us feel absolutely amazing, that make us feel head to toe fabulous!

The thing is you could walk into a shop, any shop, you can look at some of the basic clothing sizes and the clothes will be cut so fantastically and you think, oooh these will be perfect. You go to the plus size area and the price climbs massively and the cut is different. It’s so irritating!

I for one am the kind of person that doesn’t want flowers all over everything, or even butterflies, it is so annoying when you see tops that have got loads of butterflies on them. I don’t know anyone that would want an entire collection of butterfly tops.

Wanting the basics can be such a difficult thing to find. You know the little things like cami tops or just normal tops, they’re either absolutely massive and just drown your body or they cost the absolute earth.

One of the most annoying things about being plus size is the fact that the prices seem to go up massively. Yes I know there is more fabric, but with the price hike surely not by the amount that it does.

There are so many amazing brands that absolutely nail it everyday (don’t worry I will give you the down low on all the ones that you need in your life) but still the struggle is most definitely real being a plus size and fabulous.

Just because we are plus size doesn’t mean that we want clothes that have no shape, that don’t flatter our gorgeous figures.

Brands that hit the mark? River Island Plus, ASOS Curve (which has all the big brands including Boohoo, Missguided, New Look, Alice & You) Simply Be, Studio 8 (High end!) & Yours clothing to name some of my favourites!

Are you plus size & relate? Name some of your favourite plus size brands! Let me know in the comments!

I find I’m sort of inbetween; I’m not exactly a size 10/12 but I’m not plus sized either. I get frustrated because in most shops, one size is a little bit too small but the next size up is massive and I look like I’m trying to hide my body! xx

It’s a struggle, you would think there would be a middle ground or at least a guide for all stores to go by but unfortunately not 🙁 you’re gorgeous, don’t forget that! xxxx

    I feel your pain.
I do use the places mentioned in your blog, but find other suppliers’ definintion of sizes stated as XXL etc annoying,as they translate to a 16.
I’m in transition, but don’t get me started on shoes !
    Love and solidarity x ? x

I think it is more the way they’re done, sometimes I don’t mind them, but it all depends on the way they’re presented! xxxx

Oh Amie, you always look amazing. I was a plus size (22/24) a few years back, which is why I don’t like photos of myself on my wedding day. There was hardly any choice of clothes then, thankfully bigger brands have taken notice and realised that all women, whatever their size want to look and feel good in what they wear. Fab post!

I find it really frustrating!Especially tops, they are either square and short or long and tight.Never as nice as the 8/10 section either and the “plus sizes” (anything above a 10) are always sold out.Brands should see that and be more accommodating those sizes.Asos has been my love lately, especially their vera moda range.I love their skinny jeans (im a size 12/14 and buy the L which is baggy),still struggling to find a nice fitted jumper in a 12 though! Thanks for the recommendations Amie x

It really is a struggle, I feel like sometimes brands water down some of their collections, and it is honestly it is so annoying. I really want brands to understand that there are people who are larger sizes and want the same thing! We want to look amazing too! xxxx
